What I want from fic--and you
I think the single-greatest thing about the new Star Trek movie is how it's injected new life into the fandom, and how that's not at all isolated to the actors/characters from the new film. I have talked to so many people who've gotten into TOS via the film, and thus far my interactions in fandom have been really

It *is* big. But it's really nice (in my limited experience). Though obviously if you need to save up for HP, you need to do that. I just haven't felt this awesome about something in YEARS. Though my fannishness is pretty much totally for TOS and though I went to see the movie again it was mostly to read other stuff into it and prepare for writing fic and anyway I'll probably see it again...

You may be right re: Quinto!Spock. Though I love Nimoy's. Anyway I like the whole concept of seeing what's changed, and trying to figure it out, even though I suspect that a lot more thought went into "how do we make kids like this movie" than "how to we make exciting commentary on the original." Only logical.
And you haven't (I don't think) but thank you! I need to post the Shatner/Nimoy stuff here at some point for completeness, but I'm just afraid everyone will be creeped out.

I have no idea who Bester is.
As for "the kids," I don't know. I mean, the majority of people I've met in fandom are people who got into TOS after seeing the movie. When I said "the kids" earlier, I meant movie-going 14-30 year olds or whatever the target market is. I see a distinct difference in how the movie plays as opposed to the series, which was conscious, and much more action-oriented and less emotionally-driven. Which is one reason I prefer the series, though I can enjoy the movie by reading more into it. I don't see why, though, people should get angry because there are in-jokes they didn't get. I missed most of 'em, too, because it'd been awhile since I'd seen the show. I just didn't

God I always hated Riker.
But here's the weird thing: I always assumed that TOS was just for campy fun. But is it so terrible that I genuinely love it without irony, or camp, or anything? I really do think it's excellent tv, with awesome stuff going on.
Yeah, well, we've established we're looking for different things. ;) I get as bored of whooshing as you do of the briefing room. Like I loved the ep we watched last night, where Spock and McCoy are all, "Hmm, the Captain is acting irrationally, let's go talk to him" and Kirk's like, "dammit, no I'm not. Oh you want to talk? Okay go!" and they're like "blah blah is everything okay?" and he's all, "yup, super, what are you gonna do about it?" and they're like, "Um, nothing, I guess." Seriously I'd be happy if it was just the three of them bitching all episode.
Though this:
dakadakadakapewpew
is the best onomatopoeia ever.

But I am totally with you on the credits. Now that it is done I would like to see them all strung together for fun, because it is EXCITING and stuff. But after a few episodes I started closing my eyes, so I never saw them.

I don't understand. The spoilery bit was at the same time every episode, and lasted the same amount of time, and was in time with the music. So if you open your eyes at the last beat, you don't miss anything. Anyway, that was what we did. I liked the music so we didn't fast-forward, we just looked away.
