I'm Sorry

William Shatner has taken over my brain. I'm not sure I'm capable of talking about anything else. For the first time, tkp and I are sharing a fandom obsession at the same exact time, which is extremely enably and leads to mental instability. I highly recommend it.

I just made space_seed for all sorts of Star Trek time/universe bending goodness. That covers ( Read more... )

:D I am so involuntarily becoming all Trekkie myself... I ave never seen TOS but it is winging its way to me, Netflix style.... I could not resist for many reasons, perhaps the primary one being that several people have remarked on how much like movie!Kirk I am.... *facepalm* That's right, I am officially bad at life. :D

Wow. I mean, I wouldn't even know what to say to that. But that may be because I'm sort of the opposite of any Kirk. What exactly are people saying?

I think movie!Kirk has the potential to be TOS!Kirk one day. But he so is not.

It is definitely one of those comparisons that rides the line between complement and insult... :D

The specifics have varied a little from person to person, but they all seem to boil down to "Kirk is a person who gets by on charm, phenomenal luck, and vague-yet-endearing insubordination." Also, the no-win situation thing pinged some people, since everybody knows how I got in to law school - which is to say, tracking down the admissions dean after classes had already started and making my case, starting with perfectly good reasons why I'd be a great lawyer and then treading into territory like "Trust me, you have no one like me around. I have great vintage clothing, so I'd really brighten the place up, and a crowd of beautiful gay men follow me wherever I go..."

So, yeah, eerily, I can see it...

Well it works, doesn't it? And Kirk is, after all, pretty awesome. I think the thing about that is you don't want to be an unsuccessful Kirk--but if you can pull it off, hey, more power to you!

I sure hope I can pull it off... Kirk!awesome strikes me as the kind of awesome that does not occur in real life. :P But I am enough of a narcissist to secretly love the comparison and to develop a sudden, new love for all thing Star Trek...

It's possible--sometimes I watch TOS and think, Dude, if he did that in real life I'd slap him, but omg he's so awesome I don't care!

The narrative certainly supports him in this.

But hey! Star Trek love is groovy, and it's all over the place right now, and so that's good. And the fandom has, in my limited experience, been weirdly accepting and varied.
