Brokeback Mountain

Before it ever came out, Brokeback Mountain was either denigrated or celebrated, depending on the speaker/audience, as "that gay cowboy movie". Now I, for one, have nothing against gay cowboys. I love them. It's a nifty expectation-crossing identity. But honestly, is it all that surprising?

I had a kind of neutral reaction to this movie, but not because of the romance at its core--I actually saw it first and foremost as an elegy to the dying Western way of life. I think mainly it was just hyped to death and then it turned out to be just good. (I also felt cheated when I saw the credits that all the gorgeous "Wyoming" scenery was from CANADA. Gee, that's not THOUSANDS OF MILES NORTH or anything.)

As an elegy, I thought it was good and had the right balance of sweeping and human elements. As a tragic love story, it was a little too small and focused, and I guess I didn't think the love story fit into the elegy very well. Or something.

(Heath Ledger's mumbling drove me batty, too.)

Yeah; lots of times, I wish I didn't have a preconceived notion of what something is before I go in. Because then, I might have been impressed.

I thought Montana was involved somehow, though.

Montana might be the more plainsy scenes, but the gorgeous mountains were Canada. :( One of these days I will get up there.
