Alright, so with 4 months out of school and very little work done to my life that has any sort of relevance to my degree, I took the gauntlet and went for the Americorps. For those of you who don't know, Americorps are the "Domestic Peace Corps" which promote community service and love throughout the neighboorhood.
I applied with the intent to get into a snazzy microfinance program I saw listed. Instead I also larked and took a few more postings. I got a call back the very next day for a community outreach project I was vaguely interested in because it was located in Boston. After research, and much talking to to people, I have formulated the following lists. You help weigh them with me and we find out what's going on!
Pros of going to Poverty Boston Project:
-- Loans deferred for the full 10 month period
-- $4100/$4700 loan forgiveness
-- Not being home
-- Will look nice for grad school applications (to stave off the decent but not stellar grades)
-- Will look good for job applications (title: Project Coordinator, right off the bat!)
-- 11 Months means I could do the JET program with very little transitional time
-- Metrocard to ride around Greater Boston to my little heart's content (might not need car at all)
-- Eligible for food stamps(?). Great, Americorpers _do_ live in poverty
-- MA has universal health care. Go me.
Cons of the kindly Americorps Project:
-- Housing not covered. Have to look for room about 550 with utilities covered, according to them.
-- Pay sucks. About 11k before taxes
---------> won't be able to save a lot of money to cover the rest of the loan.
-- Far away from most of the people I know
-- Holy fuck I don't wanna go there and have all of the volunteers hate me cuz I'm an ignorant, unsocialable, unconforming boob.
-- I don't care for young kids that much
-- The first person I spoke to said most/some people end up taking a second job while doing the project.
It's your choice America! And that guy in Canada! And that chick touring Europe right now. Give me some more arguements and stuff. Help me flesh out information I have and know and everything.
