I harvested my carrots today. And whadda ya know? After THREE MONTHS in the ground, they were still tiny. My entire carrot harvest was about a pound... much less than that once I peeled them and cut the ends off. Gah! They will make a nice side dish for me and my husband to have for dinner sometime (honey glazed carrots), so at least that's something. But seriously, less than a pound? I planted so many carrots! My beet harvest was even worse... I had about eight edible beets out of the whole thing. And I ate them. The other few were too small for me to even try to peel. The rabbit (I call him "Furry Bastard") ate all the greens off the beets, so none of those for me either. The sugar snap peas were not doing well in the heat, so I ate the last few pods that were left and 86'ed those plants too. On an upnote... the tomato plants are doing very well. I see all three kinds of tomatoes growing really nicely: Big Boy, roma, and cherry. Now I just need to protect them from afore mentioned rabbit. I'm not sure if rabbits eat tomatoes, but one must be careful.
I am going to plant massive amounts of swiss chard in the square foot garden... and I don't know what else yet. The seed packet says swiss card does okay in the heat, so we'll see. I guess I'll try some potatoes too.
I will update again tomorrow with a massive picture post!
