Book 4/50 Powers: Who Killed Retro Girl? by Brian Michael Bendis, tpb 207 pages
Having only recently discovered Bendis with his work on the New Avengers book, I decided - when I saw this on the shelf - to give it a go. While it wasn't exactly what I'd expected, it was still an enjoyable enough read to make me want to move on to the 2nd volume.
Book 5/50 Hellspawn: The Ashley Wood Collection by Brian Michael Bendis, tpb 224 pages
Having been a Spawn nerd back when Spawn was the new hotness, I still find myself drawn to Spawn titles when I'm in the comic shop. I stopped reading Spawn after it became obvious that McFarlane really had nothing to do with the book anymore (other than collecting the paycheck). Then, back in 2002, I heard about the whole Gaiman/McFarlane falling out and lost respect for McFarlane who I had previously thought (naively) was some sort of hero of creative rights. So when I saw this Spawn featuring Bendis at the writing helm and art by Ashley Wood I figured I had to give it a go. The visuals are spectacular - having a very dark, painted feeling to them. The story is an alternative take on the original Spawn story and this time around, it's told better than in its original form. As much as I loved McFarlane's pencils back in the day, this is how it should have been from the start. And it's not a surprise that it resembles a Gaiman story more than a McFarlane story.
Book 6/50 X-Men: Complete Age Of Apocalypse Epic Book 1 by Akira Yoshida, Scott Lobdell, and Tony Bedard, tpb 376 pages
I don't get it? WTF?! Can anyone explain this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills every time I read a panel! Honestly - I know everyone goes on and on about how the "Age of Apocalypse" story-arc is thee absolute best X-Men story arc of all time. But so far - I'm not a big fan.
