Monolith has tried many times to hit a homerun in the gaming industry. Their efforts have not always been appreciated. Tron 2.0 was good, as where the No One Lives Forever games. Aliens vs. Predator (1 and 2) had an awesome multiplayer mode. None of their games have been awesome though. F.E.A.R., unfortunately, doesn't quite do it either. Yeah, the engine pumps out some beautiful graphics. Yeah, the physics are nifty. And sure, there is some atmosphere, through which, some truly startling moments arise. But somehow, the formula doesn't quite come together. The enemies aren't particularily unique or even interesting for that matter, nor are the weapons. The levels are too similar to eachother to really keep you hooked to the environment. And, quite frankly, the story is sort of uninspired. There's some undead and some clone soldiers and you're somehow connected, but you don't really know how. Oh, and there's this little black-haird ghost-girl, a-la Ringu, following you around. She appears from time to time to spook you and give you visions about your origins and whatnot. You also get to use "bullet time" which lends parts of the game a Max Payne sort of feel but also makes most of the firefights fell pretty easy. And if that weren't enough, you can also lean out around walls and shoot from the safety of cover.
In all, I'd say the game is worth the purchase if you're really looking for a new shooter to occupy your time or are looking to get a bit scared while playing on your computer. Otherwise, skip it. There are better titles about to hit shelves.
