Congratulations to everyone who is now holding a number two, or a number three in your hands. Sorry to anyone who has a number one in their hands, but you are not allowed to get married, because in my belief marriage can only be defined as an institution between a person carrying a number two or a number three. Sounds absurd right, who am I to tell you that you’re not allowed to get married, just because of a simple category that you fall under. Well that is simply what many states in the United States are trying to say.
Now some of you may be thinking, well in some states they’re allowing to have Civil Unions, or Domestic Partnerships, and yes that is true. The thing is though, by the letter of the law, Civil Unions, and Domestic Partnerships do not equal marriage. Why does the law even matter when we’re talking about marriage anyways? Because what most people don’t realize is that marriage other then being a religious term, is also a legal term.
What are the differences in legalities? Well although Civil Unions and Domestic Partnerships may grant many of the similar benefits that Marriage does, it doesn’t grant all 1,049 of them. Civil Unions and Domestic Partnerships only hold legal standings in the states that the couples live in, while Marriage will cross over from state to state. Although it differs from state to state, most Civil Unions do not carry the same benefits such as medical care, and spousal survival, meaning if your husband or wife does, you’re entitled to their finical benefits.
The terms Civil Union and Domestic Partnerships, are two terms that shouldn’t even have to exist. In fact, legally, they really don’t have any right to be enacted. Although many people will argue differently, there is a very famous legal battle that states why; Civil Unions and Domestic Partnerships shouldn’t exits. The Supreme Court Case that explains why, simply came out with the verdict of, Separate but Equal isn’t legal. That famous case is called, Brown V.S. the Board of Education. Although Brown wasn’t fighting for anything more then, to be allowed to go to same school as white people do, the verdict of Brown’s case was a corner stone for all civil rights, stating that segregation is illegal.
Now legal terms aside, some people will argue that homosexual marriage simply is unmoral. Nothing can be farther from the truth then that. What is the definition of something that is moral anyways? Who can say what is and what isn’t moral? Is there a board of people who sit around and say “oh this is moral and this isn’t”, like it was some kind of game? Truth of the matter is it is only unmoral if you, yourself think it is. No one can tell you that something is unmoral unless you want it to be. Morality is only in the eye of the beholder. To even farther prove that fact, realize that according to the population of the United State’s of America, not even any more then fifty years ago, it was unmoral for people of different ethnic backgrounds to get married, yet look around you now, people of different ethnic backgrounds are together all over the place.
Tradition that is a word that is used a lot during the arguments for or against homosexual marriage. It’s simply just traditional for marriage to be between a man and a woman. Well as that may be true, remember that for a long time in history it was tradition for rich white upper class men to not only have slaves, but also to have their wives constituted as their property.
According to my religion gay marriage shouldn’t be allowed. Now I’m not going to try and bash anyone’s religion. Religion is a scared thing to some people, but realize that not everything that your holy text have to be true. I myself am catholic, and if I’m to believe everything that the bible says is true, then by now, I should expect certain places in the world to be obliterated by fire and brimstones, simply because they don’t follow exactly what God has told them to do.
Others may argue that allowing homosexuals to marry will bring about the degeneration of the human society. That if homosexuals are allowed to get married that eventually we’re going to have to allow legalized pedophilia, legalized incest, and legalized bestiality. That is nothing more then a statement to scary the masses. There are other countries around the world, that have allowed homosexual marriage, for quite some time now, and none of those things have come to pass.
What can you do to help in the support of legalized marriage? Well one, you can right to your congress person. Write to the senators, or even the governor. If you’re not registered, register, and vote on such items if they ever come up in elections. Sign petitions stating that you’re in favor of homosexual marriage. Go to peacefully rallies. You could join your local GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance). There’s so many things you can do to help support legalized homosexual marriage, but first all you have to do is ask yourself, “Do I support homosexual marriage”.
Thank you for your time.
This is my speech for well, speech class, let me know what you all think.
