Drawing Akashi

Feb 15, 2013 12:58

Long time since last post again xD
I'm enjoying my Chinese New Year Holiday~ though it's almost over and I haven't done anything.........OTL

Today I decided to share my process of drawing this Akashi (this awesome character from the Shonen Jump Manga Kuroko no Baske):
because I haven't got anything better to write about..

Which is posted on [deviantart] :)

It's originally a cover of the 20th volume of the comic KuroBasu- this photo below:

I borrowed it from my friend (because I love this manga), and I initially wasn't intending to draw this guy, but as I stared closer at the cover, I realized that the author has used a lot of various mediums to draw this cover, and I was interested to reproduce it :3 (like, water colour/copic/colour pencils)

And since I've already returned the actual manga back to my friend, I decided to display the photo earlier on my laptop and draw observing the screen xD (TECHNOLOGY FTW)
But it was really difficult D: The balance was like...ughughugh and it doesn't look like him at all and it took me like 3 hours just drawing this single guy.. GOSH. I know it still looks awkward but I couldn't bother fixing it any longer so I decided to start outlining it.

Medium used so far:
Paper- proper drawing paper and so it doesn't allow ink bleeding/ paper ripping due to excess of water.
Pencil- just a usual mechanical pencil.

DONE OUTLINING.
I just outlined the basic lines (ignore shadows ofcourse) with outlining manga pens of various thicknesses..

Mediums in this step:
COPIC Multi liner (0.05, 0.1, 0.3)

Let's start colouring!

My random working space. (y)
So I decided to paint all the basic colours in with water colour..faintly, just in case.
Oh and the skin was firstly coloured in with Copic markers.

I sort of shaded the neck roughly just for a guideline..

Mediums in this step:
Water colour (cheap, ordinary one but with a lot of colours)
Copic marker E50 (my favourite xD)

And then few minutes later...

More colours on the hair. Randomly brushing on the hair with water colour.
And further shading on face..with water colour again. I mixed lilac/reddish brown/wine red/light orange to make the shadows of the skin :)
I might have used a copic marker E04 to make shadows on the hair.

Hours later..

So I've finished most of it. 90% is done with water colour.
I struggled on the hair, because I realized that there are alot of lines on the hair of the original picture.. so I used dark copic markers to draw the lines of the hair and soft chalk to put light colours on the hair. Soft chalks are really effective for highlights of the hair..I think.
The uniform/collar is done by water colour, but it went kinda weird because I painted the collar in white with poster paint at first, and then when I stroked water paint on the poster paint it smudged and went everywhere.. TAT
Anyways, I just basically painted over and over again to create the shadows by water colour. I'm pretty sure if this was done digital I'll have like 10 layers just for the skin xD

About an hour later.

Water coloured the uniform jacket and put white highlights on the hair with a white chalk.

Mediums used:
More Water colour
Copic markers E04 for hair, E47 for lines of the hair, C-1 for extra faint shadows, R02 for shading the eye, 100 for the black parts
Poster paint (white) to white-out the mistakes xD
Chalk/ soft pastels for highlighting hair

And then I realized I need other colours of Copic markers so I decided to leave the picture as it is and continue the next day.

So the next day.

Hm....I added more shadows but then I think I kinda made his face too dark.... (`・ω・´;;)
Well...I think I can fix it if I just colour over it with colour pencils......

I used a black charcoal to add the shadows on the hair. and then thanks to that black stuff went over his face and it's so dark it almost looks like Aomine ;w;

Additional Mediums:
Copic markers R14 for hair, B02 and BG72 and B23 for the blue lines on the uniform, C-3 and W-3 for the shadows of the uniform.
White chalk to smudge shadows on the neck.

Well so I decided to add further colours with colour pencils to make the picture look more soft...

Under daylight..It looks pretty fine under daylight...?
but his skin is too orange/brown :'3 Well, I guess I'll just leave it like this pq

Okay so I'm done!! My workspace again :)

Actual pic:

Phew. Took me a long time but I guess I'm happy with it :p

Now time to do homework!! I have other stuff to draw but I don't have time..xD
