Basically Arthur gets a little sus of Merlin after having put up with his Manservant’s ridiculous behavior.
One day he snoops around Merlin’s bedroom. He doesn’t find anything of magical properties of any kind but instead… a bunch of notes that’ve been scribbled and locked away.

When Gwen and Morgana both try to set Merlin and Arthur up with people they secretly hate, they hatch a plan to show up to the holiday party together so everyone thinks they're an item. What seems at first to be the perfect plan slowly goes haywire as Merlin's feelings he's been running from all this time come rushing to the surface, and Arthur discovers things about himself, Merlin, and their relationship he'd never allowed himself to think.

But Merlin is not giving up his space so easily-- he writes a strongly worded letter, planning to leave it under the tosser's windshield wiper and call it a day, except when he gets there... the owner has not left his car, and Merlin hates his life because good lord he is hot. 1837: Orphan Mordred, now a ward of his aunts, isn't very happy with the upcoming Christmas celebrations or the state of his world in general.
1851: The Caerleons struggle to come to terms with the strange events happening in their newly-bought mansion right around Christmastide.
Present Day: Paranormal Investigators Merlin and Arthur set out to research Lothian Hall, which has a long history of supernatural occurrences.

Merlin is court sorcerer, but having that role means he isn't Arthur's manservant anymore, and Merlin misses it. Not all of it, obviously, but the domestic bits, like waking him up every morning and wishing him a good sleep every night.
Now, Arthur has a new manservant, Quentin, to do those things - and Merlin hates it. Everyone knows he hates Quentin, but nobody knows why. Naturally, the knights bet on it, because what else do they have to do in a land of myth and a time of magic (and peace)?

Arthur kept on complaining about all the stress throughout the entire meal and when he didn’t even comment on the food Merlin had put a whole lot of effort in, he snapped.
“Arthur, I dare you to talk of stress one more time and I’ll serve you some stress. You won’t do any shopping tomorrow - No, don't give me that look - We’ll get out of town and actually enjoy christmas. Like everyone should do, especially you, you big grumpy idiot.”
Arthur shook his head violently, but Merlin silenced him with a glare.
“And now tell me this dinner has been amazing or you’ll sleep on the balcony. Your choice, really.”

When Merlin's mate, Will, was teasing him about being single, Merlin cracked and simply invented a boyfriend to make Will shut up. Unfortunately, his mum overheard and was so happy for him, that he couldn't bring himself to tell her that it wasn’t true. Things got a little out of hand when Merlin continued to embellish the lie until he had a fully-formed pretend serious boyfriend that his mum wanted him to bring to the family Christmas party...
It was only when his friend, Gwen, pointed out that the boyfriend Merlin had made up sounded a bit like Arthur - who was part of their group of friends but not Merlin's favourite person in the world - that the idea of asking the prat to pretend to be his boyfriend at the party formed. Perhaps not the best idea ever - Merlin just hoped to be able to make it through the party without anyone guessing the truth.

5 Times Merlin disguised himself. And 1 time he stops hiding.
Alternatively:
When Gwaine finds out about Merlin’s magic, he convinces Merlin to use it for funs sake.
He learned of the Dolma and Dragoon and immediately makes Merlin come up with new diguises.
And he does it, so Merlin can hear how Arthur talks about Merlin behind his back.
Which is surprisingly positive. And partly embarrassing, but Arthur doesn’t even notice how obviously he’s pining.
Merlin, however, sees it for the first time from the eyes of a maid, a knight, a royal, a stable boy, a barkeeper etc.
Surprisingly enough, Gwaine doesn’t even ask Merlin to prank Arthur. He just makes him listen.
And that’s how bitter and depressed season 5 Merlin gets healed from his paranoia and self depreciation. (Series: Part 60 of the Merlin´s magic series)

It is in the middle of the night after a long day filled with endless discussions with his manservant that Arthur lies awake. He lies in his dark room, the fire long burnt out, but his thoughts won't calm down.
Arthur had really been trying to protect Merlin, just this once. But Merlin absolutely insisted on finding out what was going on and then on accompanying Arthur.
The defiance and loyalty Merlin shows over and over again cause a warm, comforting feeling in Arthur's stomach which is quickly chased away by a dry throat and a tingling sensation running up and down his spine whenever he thinks about his manservant for too long.
Arthur gets up at some point and lights up a candle. He takes a look in the mirror and can't find anything that has changed in his appearance while his emotions are a total mess. (Series: Part 22 of the A merthury, merthury Christmas! series )
