Arthur knew that Merlin didn't want to marry him despite the language barrier (the tears when Arthur first took him on a rocky shore were a big clue) but Merlin's older brother handed him over so he is Arthur's now and that's all there is to it.So it's a surprise when Merlin won't let Arthur have his way one night and says "Tonight I want to see your face" in Arthur's language.
