(FIC;PG) Yet Another Argument by GmariamgmariamMarch 15 2011, 02:12:46 UTC
Title: Yet Another Argument Author/Artist: Gmariam Character/Pairing:Lily/James Rating & Warnings:None Prompt: 63. "Still I wonder why it is I don't argue like this With anyone but you" -Corinne Bailey Rae, Like a Star Summary: Lily and James discuss some things on the Astronomy Tower. Author's Note: I love to write dialogue, and that's how this poured out tonight. I had to cut loads to hit the 500 mark. I'm rubbish at titles but hopefully it fits the prompt. Enjoy!
"Sod off, Potter!"
"You first, Evans!"
"I was here before you."
"I don't care. I like the view."
"You're not even taking Astronomy. I have N.E.W.T.s in eight months."
"I came up here to think. That's just as important."
"I hardly think contemplating the size of Carin O'Connell's breasts qualifies as deep thinking. I need to study."
"I need fresh air."
"Why?"
"None of your business. Look, I'll take this side of the tower, you take that one. We won't even have to see each other."
"Fine."
"Fine."
"James?"
"What is it, Evans?"
"What are you thinking about?"
"Whether or not I should jump."
"James! You're not!"
"It'd be a right bit quieter on the way down."
"I'm sorry."
"Get to work, Evans. The heavens wait for no one."
"James?"
"What?"
"Is everything all right?"
"Yes."
"Then what do you need to think about?"
"I'm trying to work up my wand to talk to Dumbledore."
"Why?"
"I'm quitting as Head Boy."
"Why would you do that?"
"Because I'm rubbish at it, that's why."
"You are not."
"I've had three detentions, failed two quizzes, and lost the first Quidditch match. I can't do it all."
"I think you're brilliant, if that helps."
"It doesn't. You just don't want to work with Robertson."
"You're right, I don't. I'd rather work with you."
"Bollocks. You'll be glad to be rid of me."
"I won't."
"You're lying."
"I'm not. Don't quit, James. You can work all that other stuff out."
"Not all of it."
"What else is there?"
"Nothing."
"What about me?"
"What about you? You'll finally be rid of me."
"You're not quitting because of me, are you?"
"No, I'm turning in my badge because I'm just not meant to be Head Boy."
"Dumbledore wouldn't have chosen you if he didn't believe in you."
"He makes mistakes. I'm one of them."
"What's with the sudden pity party, Potter?"
"Back off, Evans. I don't want to talk about it anymore."
"Too bad. Tell me why you're really leaving, and I'll tell you if you can."
"If I can? I don't need permission."
"You do when you're acting like an idiot. Go on. Tell me."
"I told you-it's too much."
"And you're sick of me, is that the rest of it?"
"Of course not!"
"Why, then?"
"This is why I can't work with you, Evans. Not anymore."
"I don't understand."
"I'm tired of it, Lily. I'm tired of bickering every night, of fighting after every meeting. I hoped we'd get along this year, but I was wrong. I give up - on you, on me, on us."

This was the right touch of banter and sincere concern for me. It's nice to see James depicted as being vulnerable; that's a trait a lot rarer in fic than I wish it was. Very enjoyable! :)

Thanks so much! Is that trait really that rare? Because I can't seem to write James any other way sometimes, lol. I like it too - I think I have some sort of vulnerable hero complex. Thanks again! :)
Re: (FIC;PG) Yet Another Argument by GmariamgmariamMarch 17 2011, 00:23:21 UTC
Thanks! You know, I'm thinking of expanding this to a full little story. But then, I pick on James mercilessly in my fics so maybe I shouldn't, lol. Thanks again! :)

Thanks so much! I really enjoy writing the occasional dialogue only piece - I love their banter, but I'm glad more come out through just their words. Thanks again! :)

This was really cute! I could sort of tell that you cut stuff though, not that that's a bad thing... I think it seemed remarkably tender for how 'directly to the point' it is. Anyway, great job, I love Astronomy Tower scenes <3

Aw, I really liked that. A lot of Lily/James fics focus predominantly on the James side of the relationship (James chasing Lily! James bewitching Lily's pants to ask her out! James pining over Lily! Sirius wishing James didn't just pine over Lily!) and it was nice to see Lily's concern for James as well.

"Because I don't want you to."
"You have a funny way of showing it."
"So do you."
"I don't know how else to show you."
"Neither do I. So will you stay?"
"Not if you keep arguing with me about it."
"I think I'd rather do something else."
"Study?"
"No."
"Mm. You'll have no argument from me there."
