Week 3 - Autumn

Day 16 (October 20th)

"The first time James tried to woo Lily? Oh, yes. I remember that perfectly. In fact, I think they're going to add it to the next edition of Hogwarts, A History as the most idiotic and extravagant attempt ever made by a male student to win a girl's heart.

Let's see…it was back in fourth year, I think. It was Autumn anyway, and a perfect day for a Quidditch match. Gryffindor was slaughtering Ravenclaw on the Pitch. Embarrassing, really. And in the middle of the match, a group of sirens-yes, as in the mythological sirens-appear out of nowhere and start singing this ridiculous song to Lily. Obviously not their own work. I mean, the verses started out rhyming and then just stopped halfway through. And the content? Only James Potter could’ve come up with this rubbish:

“Her hair is as red as bright autumn leaves,
if she does not love me my heart, it will cleave.
Your freckles, love, are like specks in cream
And to drink them up, would be quite the dream”

On and on it went from that. It didn’t get any better, either. If anything, it got worse.

Anyway, I don't pretend to know how James ever convinced the sirens to serenade her, and it's probably best left a mystery. But Lily, poor thing, looked like she was ready to crawl into a corner and die of embarrassment. I don’t blame her.

Snape saw all of this, naturally, and confronted James about it in the corridor after dinner. They got into a big fight over it-throwing punches and hexes and what not. For some reason they both thought they had a chance with Lily when in reality she was dating this dishy sixth year named Richard. I wonder if either of them even knew about Richard, or if they just chose to ignore it.

I left shortly after the fight broke out. But from what I heard after everything was said and done, Peter couldn't stop hopping around on one foot, Remus could only speak in quotes, Sirius and his little brother both had a number of broken bones, James kept hiccupping bubbles, and Snape didn't have any eyebrows. Not the most spectacular spell damage I ever saw in my time with those boys, but it certainly was memorable.
