IIDX meme

1. What's your handle? What name do you use on the high score screen?

I never make it on the high score screen, but probably either MWIN or KIO!--whichever strikes my fancy.

2. What's your age and gender?

24 and male.

3. When did you fill out these questions?

Sunday, June 4, 2006

4. Where do you usually play? Is it usually crowded?

Only at ACME; I'm not one of those lucky enough to own a IIDX setup at home. I also go at (relatively speaking) weird hours, so it's almost never crowded.

5. What date did you start playing IIDX?

Sometime in the spring of 2001, I think.

6. Your current level is ...

I can regularly pass SP 5dan. 6dan is a bit of a stretch. I can pass most 7s, or under the Happy Sky rating system, a handful of 9s.

7. Are you an arcade player or a CS player?

Primarily arcade, but I'd love to get my hands on a CS setup.

8. Do you play single play? Double play? Do you play primarily one-handed?

I'm working primarily on single, but one day I'd love to pick up double.

9. What's more important to you? Clearing hard songs or getting high EX score?

I play primarily to clear new stuff, but hope to improve my EX scores as well.

10. What made you start playing IIDX?

I noticed that 3rd style had a lot of songs I recognized from DDR, which was a big change from the 5-key beatmania machines I'd seen. Later on, I was to learn that IIDX OSTs generally had BETTER songs.

11. What's your favorite IIDX style? What's your favorite song from each style (the "song of the style")?

Toss-up between 6th and 9th, though I'm also partial to 5th, 7th, and RED.

3rd - Era Nostal, Holic, Skyscraper, Reincarnation, R5
4th - Empathy, Final Countdown, DXY!, Jive Into the Night, Clione
5th - Sync, In My Eyes, The Shining Polaris, Abyss, Insertion
6th - Frozen Ray, Colors, Y31, Linus, Romeo and Juliet
7th - Secret Tale, Traces, Tomorrow Perfume, Remember Me, Zero-One
8th - Hyper Boundary Gate, Symbolic, Sakura, Blame, I.C.F. 5800
9th - Quasar, Star Field, Moon Child, Distress, Be Rock U
10 - DoLL, Daisuke, Carry On Night, Ghost Revival, Pandora
RED - Don't Be Afraid Myself, Injection of Love, Oosanbashi, T.A.I.Y.O, Night Flight to Tokyo

12. Who's your favorite artist?

I have a ton. I won't single out one.

13. What's your favorite genre?

See 12.

14. What are your favorite three songs (in order)?

This is fairly arbitrary, but off the top of my head, Sync, Sakura, and Quasar. Almost anything on the above list qualifies, though.

5. Do you have any songs you don't like playing but like the music for?

A few. Bad Boy comes to mind.

16. Is using the EASY mod cheating?

No, but I don't consider it a solid pass until I can pass consistently without it.

17. What high speed level do you play at?

HS3 for the most part to anything just under 185 BPM. HS2 for things above it, HS1 for anything above 220. I should try HS4 for <135 BPM

18. Ever died an instant death cause a fast song came on in a ranking course while you were on HS3?

Not yet, but I'm sure it will happen.

19. What do you think of autoscratch?

I don't use it, ever.

20. Do you rush to build your combo back if you break it?

I don't pay attention to combo while playing.

21. Do you like jackhammers/long drills of same-key presses?

God, no. Love Generation [A] can kiss my ass.

22. Do you like scales/staircases?

Sometimes, but the ones like in Don't Be Afraid Myself get annoying.

23. Do you like chords (multiple keypresses at the same time)?

These are fun. See Secret Tale [A].

24. Do you like scratches?

Yes, but only when I don't suck at them. Sadly, I almost always suck at them.

25. Do you like random, scattered patterns?

Sure. See Hyper Boundary Gate.

26. Do you like drumrolls?

Not particularly, but they're good for practicing even timing.

27. Do you accidentally choose the wrong song by turning the turntable too far, or not far enough, at the song select screen?

Very rarely.

28. Do you mean to play BATTLE mode with two people, but sometimes forget to turn it on before entering the game?

I've only done it once or twice.

29. Have you ever meant to play a song Another but selected Light? Have you ever done the opposite?

Never. Knock on wood.

30. Have you ever meant to pick Easy but picked Hard?

See above.

31. To get better, you need to try your best.

Um, duh? You certainly don't get better without working at it, I'll say that.

32. To get better, you need time.

Play time, yes.

33. To get better, you need money.

This kind of goes without saying.

34. Do you usually play normal 7/14KEYS or EXPERT mode?

I love expert courses, but they don't always cater to the songs I like.

35. What's the song you usually play most? What expert course?

Whatever I'm currently working on passing, plus I like to get songs like Sync and Blame into the Platinum course. I love playing the ranking courses.

36. How often do you play?

Whenever I can, which isn't often.

37. Ever wish you had another finger (or hand)? Or been able to see out your fingers? Or are you fine the way you are?

I've never wished for physical alterations, no.

38. Can you live without paper?

I've never tried this, myself.

39. There seem to be an unusual number of one-handed players recently. Do you play one-handed? If so, what level do you play at?

I SUCK at one-hand play. I try to do it from time to time because I think it will help improve my skill, but I don't make concerted efforts to do so.

40. Are there too many insanely hard doubles songs?

Probably. I don't play double yet, so I couldn't say.

41. Are there any songs you think have a wrong star rating?

No way are Tomorrow Perfume 7k and Y31 [A] the same difficulty.

42. What song (like 5.1.1.) do you think is insanely different between its normal and another versions?

Are we talking music or notechart? I can think of a ton of examples for the latter.

43. Have you been to a convention?

Nope.

44. Have you placed on Internet Ranking?

Haaaaaaaa.

45. Pay much attention to the movies? Which ones are your favorite?

I'm gonna get slammed for this, but I like DoLL. Also, Linus rules, as does anything with Tran.

46. What song were you happiest to have cleared?

I was way jazzed when I cleared DXY!.

47. What score were you happiest to get?

I dunno. My scores all suck.

48. What's the most mortifying song fail you've had?

There were a bunch, but I failed DoLL 7k once.

49. How many play cards do you have? Which ones?

None. Sadness.

50. Do you want skill points, like in GF/DM?

I obviously don't play enough GF/DM to answer this question.

51. Have you ever done anything painful, like jam a finger while playing, or catch your fingernail in the gap between the button and its frame?

Not so much, but I get callouses when I do play, because I tend to do so for prolonged periods of time when I do.

52. Does it help your score to have something tapping out the beat in the background, like someone clapping?

I'd think that'd get distracting.

53. How many people does it take around a cabinet before you start forming a line?

Two or three?

54. Do you have a "theme song"?

Besides Sync? Probably either DoLL or Don't Be Afraid Myself, but at ACME I tend to play Secret Tale and Fly Through the Night a ton.

55. What's your grade on Gambol?

I've never played it.

56. Have you ever failed because you thought a song was over before it was?

Not yet, but I swear one day I probably will.

57. Any songs you wish Konami would bring back?

The Shining Polaris, damnit.

58. The just great window from 10th on is smaller, isn't it?

My timing sucks anyway.

59. How much will you spend on a game in a day?

Far too much. This would be less of an issue if I could play more often.

60. How much have you spent on IIDX so far?

I don't want to know.

61. Have you ever shouted at someone browsing the gallery or scores on an arcade machine in a game center?

Why would I?

62. Do you ever adopt weird posture sitting at an arcade machine? (Like crossing your legs, or hunching over the buttons ... )

I cross my legs all the time anyway.

63. Was the addition of LIGHT mode the beginning of a new era?

I don't think so?

64. Are you left handed or right handed?

Right

65. What side do you play on?

Left

66. Can you play on the other side (without autoscratch)?

I suck at it pretty badly.

67. Do you use your little finger?

To assist with scrating, and sometimes on scales.

68. What style do you think Konami will release IIDX through?

Hopefully many more.

69. Please tell us which three of the following you most want to pass: Holic[A], V[A], Colors[A], A[A], Spica[A], Sakura[A], Please Don't Go[A], one or eight[A], moon_child[A]

Probably Moon Child, Colors, and Holic. Don't ask why.

70. What do you think the ratio of boy IIDX players to girl IIDX players is?

I've never wondered.

71. When did you have the impression of having improved the most?

Hard to say.

72. When did you have the impression of having gotten worse?

When I stopped for like, six months.

73. How do you deal with getting out of a slump?

Keep playing?.

74. Which effectors do you usually use?

I like Surround.

75. Do you ever feel crowded when you're playing with someone else?

Depends on how much space they take up.

76. Have you ever done session mode? (If you have, do you wish they'd bring it back?)

Never had the, uh, privilege.

77. How do you pronounce "IIDX"?

See Hitchhiker2.

78. Do you have an ASC?

I wish.

79. Do you buy soundtracks?

Were I finanically independent, I would.

80. What's your secret to getting good at IIDX?

Keep trying harder stuff.

81. Have you ever played a song so much it ended up in the ranking courses?

I've probably assisted Sync's placement.

82. Do you find yourself playing the silver and bronze courses more than the platinum and gold?

I play whatever has the best songs.

83. Without the gallery, there would be nothing to do.

I don't pay attention to the gallery.

84. Do your shoulders and hips get stiff after playing?

No, but my fingers and wrists hurt like mad.

85. Have you gotten someone hooked, or did someone else get YOU hooked?

Both.

86. Have you ever played when you knew you shouldn't for some other consideration (like time, or money)?

Oh, yes. Let's not even go there.

87. Does passing a song only once count, or do you have to be able to pass it consistently?

They both count, but I pay more attention to the latter.

Note: anmitsu is a technique to cope with lots of keypresses very close to each other. For example, if you have to press 1, then 2, then 3, soon after each other, you instead press 1+2+3 at the same time. This gets you goods instead of greats, but continues your combo.
88. Long live the anmitsu technique!

I try not to, but it works out, and sometimes I do it unintentionally while flailing/mashing.

89. Do you have a mentor?

Not so much, but I compare notes with people who are better than me.

90. Do you have any rivals?

I don't know enough people close enough to my skill level; they're all either way better or not as good.

91. Do you go to try a new release the day it comes out?

No, but I wouldn't mind doing so.

92. Snacks or IIDX, which is better?

Uh?

93. How many friends that play IIDX do you also know from offline?

All of them.

94. Have you ever met any online friends in person?

I fail to see how this relates to IIDX, but not as many as I'd like.

95. What are you most concerned with when you play?

Timing and technique.

96. What makes you happiest about having played IIDX?

It's fun, I've got good songs on my HD because of IIDX, and it improves my manual dexterity.

97. Are there any questions you didn't understand? Which ones?

A few. #92 makes no sense whatsoever.

98. What is your current, most immediate "goal" with regards to IIDX?

Pass Colors 7k, damnit.

99. What is your most far-off goal with regards to IIDX?

I dunno. Being able to pass everything on 7k [A]?

100. You made it through! Good work. Please feel free to say a few words.

B4U can go to hell.

geeky, bemani
