I don't know if anybody would watch it, but here's a concept for a TV show I'd like to see:
Title: "Do Gooders"
Episode 1:
Jimmy Carter and
Habitat Humanity visit a New Orlean's neighborhood for a week of projects. Show features residents, and the continuing effects of Katrina.
Finale of episode features a block party with music by New Orlean's artists affected by the Hurricane, and a special appearance by BB King.
Episode 2:
BB King returns and helps with organizing a renovation and upgrading of equipment for a children's hospital specializing in type 1 diabetes.
Finale of episode features a
"Make a Wish" event for a child with a terminal disease who really wanted to meet "Captain Sparrow" - Johnny Depp.
Episode 3:
Johnny Depp organizes a set of
"School at Sea" expeditions for inner-city kids...
The general thread is showcasing organizations and people who are involved in improving lives around the world. A "Reality Show/Human Interest" component shows the lives of the people benefitted. The "guest" theme focuses on the idea of involving others - magnifying your own personal effort, and showing that there's more to do than just writing a check. With a lot of luck, recognizable folks with "Star Power" would actually start lining up to get involved in the show. Additionally the audience would have more information about cool projects to get involved in, thereby increasing volunteers and donations to those organizations.
It shouldn't be preachy, nor overly sappy. The idea is that volunteering can be fun, it's going on all around you, it's easy to get started, and it makes a world of difference.
Now... if I just thought a) this had a snowball's chance in hell, and b) knew somebody to pursue it...
