Since actually applying for jobs doesn't seem to be working for me, I thought I'd try volunteering through the Red Cross for a while and see how that goes. Of course, it doesn't beat actually getting a paycheck, but you never know, I might meet someone who could hire me for something....
This morning's orientation class was interesting, first a video about the history of the organization and then a fairly weepy propaganda show about how wonderful it is for RC volunteers to work with "wounded warriers" in the hospital. Afterwards we each leafed through binders with volunteer opportunities and chatted about what we might like to do or have done in the past. One interesting exchange I couldn't help eavesdropping in on ended with one person saying to another, "So you make weighted decisions?" The question clearly came with much awe from the younger party. Without any military background, I can only assume that the senior person in this conversation had come from a position of some authority!
I picked out something having to do with finance, since if I worked with injured people there's a chance I might see some actual blood and possibly faint or otherwise disgrace myself.
