And Debate Goes On

This scene from The Bounty Hunter it appears has long been debated. What exactly is that thing near Hutch's golden locks and what does it symbolize?

I used to work as a Supervisor in a big thrift store chain. I was in charge of antiques, odd bits of trivia about vintage junk, lifting moral consciousness and Dance breaks.

Got so I could look at a dusty old box of junk and tell what was in it. Grandma's kitchen box? A puke gold plastic utensil tray with part of an everyday silverware set. Several bottle openers. A melon baller. A sewing kit that looks like a matchbook. Matchbooks. Dull knives with odd curves. Bobby pins and flat push pins. An orange juice squeezer. And plastic fruit magnets.

The thing on the sunvisor is a heavy duty banana magnet. I've seen a million of then. I could be wrong and invite debate. But I think I'm right. Have you ever noticed how Hutch often has a banana in his hand? Black & Blue, is one I remember. And Snowstorm I think. Ah! Another research project. Hutch likes bananas. It may be a real banana stuck up in the visor. Oh, well. Is there another banana on the dash?

People in the seventies got a real kick out of realistic looking plastic things. Like plastic fruit with realistic looking bruises. Realistic looking spilled coffee cups and wedges of pie. And realistic looking poured milk.

The main company who made these strange items was called Frozen Moments. But back to Hutch's banana magnet. Sunvisors on cars back then were made of cloth or vinyl wrapped steel. So if you had a strong enough magnet you could post notes in your car. Before post-its were invented there were banana magnets. Now, Kids, what would Hutch banana post to Starsky? Hummmmm????
