I love illustrators, the unsung creative geniuses of modern art. Like the Starsky and Hutch community artists, many are not appreciated until the pulp and zines have almost all been lost. Take heart! You are appreciated right here!
Robert E. Schulz was born in New Jersey in 1928. He is considered one of the best pulp fiction and science fiction artists of all time. In the 1950's the artist was hired by Pocket Books and later by Signet, Dell and Bantam. His paintings graced many magazines including Fantasy & Science Fiction and Male, an adventure magazine for not quite so adventurous men. The Starsky & Hutch TV guide cover was one of his last works.
I became intrigued by this TV Guide cover and found out the Artist's name was Robert E. Schulz, 1928-1978.
The original still exists and was sold at auction recently.
The inspiration in the flesh. There could not have been two patchwork shirts like that! I love how the artist captured their expressions and formed the Starsky & Hutch personas on his canvas.I wonder if he had them pose with the guns. "Hey, Hutch, my gun is bigger than yours for a change." said Starsky. "Keep dreaming, Starsk."said Hutch. Sigh. Art. Sigh.
Vintage Brawny Man. One of Schulz's works. Not so inconsiderable brawn? This dude was a gas station attendant in New Jersey. He was offered other modeling jobs after this but didn't want to commute to New York!
COOOOOOOl! I met Issac Asimov at a Star Trek Con in NY, 1974. I said, "I enjoyed your lecture very much!" He said, "Thank you." Treasured memory.
Ummmmm. Get out of the water, manly man. What is the point of this? Still, cool piranhas.
Her eyes and hair are just awesome.I want that shade of nail polish and lipstick. Coral Snake, perhaps?
