Looking on the bright side of life

The weather is utterly crap today - seriously New York, fuck off with your rain and snow and wet, slushy streets - and I have a shitload of work to catch up on from when I was sick earlier this week, but I have two dvds of Criminal Minds at home, plus several unwatched episodes on my dvr. Somehow that makes it slightly more bearable.

I'm still not exactly sure what it is about Criminal Minds that has me so completely obsessed. I mean, I love Spencer Reid to little bits and pieces - he's kind of like an Inui/Renji composite, except blond and from Las Vegas - but it's not just him. And I've always liked procedurals, but not in the watch-obsessively-for-several-hours-a-day sense.

I think the focus on the psychology of the criminals is part of it. It's not a CSI or a Law&Order in that sense, because the heart of it is getting into the criminal's head more than simply catching him/her. But mostly it's the characters. Reid is obviously my favorite, but with the exception of Morgan (who I like, really, but don't find that personally interesting outside his relationships), the characters are all great, and complex, and not particularly stereotypical.

Also, there's hilarity in almost every episode, even if it's just a few one-liners. For example:

Elle: There could be an email or a journal in the computer, something that tells us where Heather is. Do you think you can break in?
Morgan: In six drives?
Gideon: "Try again. Fail again. Fail better."
Reid: (nods) Samuel Beckett.
Morgan: "Try not. Do or do not."
(Gideon looks at Reid as he doesn't know the quote)
Reid: Yoda.

I love these people.
