Last night
glasspyramids and I had a transcontinental viewing of The Ultimate Watchmen, which, besides being awesome, was a three-hour exercise in:
1. Exclaiming how hot Dan is - seriously, I don't know how I didn't realize how gorgeous he is until the movie was nearly over the last time. Maybe I was just caught up in the experience.
2. Exclaiming how pretty Adrian is. Really. Matthew Goode is, of course, damned gorgeous, and in general I prefer is dark hair, but there's something about the blond hair. It adds an ethereal quality, and shoots him straight into outright beautiful.
3. Wondering how the hell we missed all the VeidtOwl hints the first time around. This might shock people, considering that we've been writing the pairing since April, but when we first started what became Among the Trees we were expecting something platonic, Dan perhaps forgiving Adrian, yes, but the two of them just being friends. When it went straight into romance, we were both kind of surprised. But it's all there: Hugging. Lingering looks. Dan's disbelief that Adrian could really be doing this until they're there in Karnak and he's faced with the irrefutable truth.
Other interesting observations: while I still didn't like Rorschach (and I won't dwell on this, because I know that some people on my flist do), I found it interesting that I had a lot more empathy this time around for the Comedian, who I didn't like at all when I first watched the movie. I think it's because he owns his flaws. He has no illusions about being a terrific guy; he's not, and knows it. In a way, I respect that.
The most heartbreaking scenes for me are still Hollis's death, and the moment when Dan and Laurie leave Karnak, leaving Adrian alone and isolated in his trashed fortress. That look between all three of them - but especially the way Patrick Wilson and Matthew Goode play it - is full of anger and regret and sorrow, and there's a stoic loneliness in the way Adrian watches them go.
