sooo, haven´t updated on this for a while. so i´ve graduated from high school and now traveling all summer. i left for the dominican republic on june 13th and will be here until july 1st, then am traveling through guatemala, honduras, and nicaragua for 5 weeks until august 5th. i´m gonna be posting the e'mails i´m sending out to my friend here just to give all you guys, my lj friends, updates on what i´m doing.

this is from june 16th

Well, i´m sitting in a funky little internet cafe in santo domingo right now. The guys behind me are listening to spanish reggae (weird, i know) and this place smells strangely of baby powder.
I´ve had an awesome time here so far. On this part of my trip (in the dominican republic until july 1st), i´m here with 3 other people: maya, a volutneer from chicago that was here last summer, kud, a volunteer from boston who was here last summer, and her friend dianne, who was a volunteer in nicaragua last summer with amigos. It´s awesome because we all speak spanish so no one feels left out. We´re the weirdest group in the world though; i´m white, maya´s cuban-nigerian, kud is pakistani, and dianne is korean. We´re like the multi-cultural group. We´ve decided to only speak spanish when walking around, and when people see a group of a white guy, a black girl, a pakistani girl, and an asian girl, they always take double takes. We went to the national aquarium here the other day, and there were a bunch of american tourists there and when they saw us speaking spanish (mostly me, because i´m pretty damn white) they were pretty weirded out.
Today we went to this gorgeous beach called boca chica. It´s the beach that the people from santo domingo go to all the time for day vacations. Its a beach protected by a batch of mangroves that are growing maybe about 200 meters out, so it´s completely flat, warm, crystal clear, and shallow. Absolutely gorgeous. We all rented a paddle boat for an hour and went paddling around for a while, talking to random people in the water.
Tonight i think we´re going to a discoteca to go dancing, but i´m not sure because everyone else seems to be pretty tired. But we´ll see.
Tomorrow we´re all going back to our communities until next thursday, and then we´re getting back together to travel up north to the mountains. Then on July 1st the rest of my group is going back home and flying to Guatemala to travel through central america with my friend lesley for 5 weeks.
