So, a few of you may or may not have gathered from my ongoing complaining (off-line) that our furnace is broken. It has two settings -- on (sweat lodge) and off (can make Otter Pops on the coffee table). We've been managing this fairly well since it started to get cold; it's like a Little House on the Prairie game to see how long we can last into the winter without regular heat. Our process has gone like this: We ge home, turn the heat on, and an hour later strip down to t-shirts and shorts. Then, about an hour after that -- when the sweat beads form on our foreheads and upper lips -- we turn it off, eventually adding clothing as the house cools and going to bed before it gets too frosty for us to (consciously) notice.
That was all fine and dandy until M got home today. She ran down to the basement to flip the switch only to find that it wasn't working at all.
So we ran to Fred Meyer, and though we were tempted by the space heaters, we used the opportunity to buy Some of Them Store-Bought Logs and had our first fire of the season. Please note: Though they do have a realistic crackling sound, as promised, they give off little heat. I am currently sitting with my toes close enough to stir the embers, and still -- I shiver. (Beware: Gratuitous fireplace shot to come.)
So here we are, dressed like we're going sledding and taking periodic tea and hot cocoa breaks just to keep our fingers from snapping off. (Beware: Gratuitous Eskimo shot to come.)
