watched 'betty blue' tonight. director's cut.
god was it long...
ok, i have to admit i dug out this movie to watch mainly for the notorious sex scenes and nudity. nothing really bad-ass by today's standards but i guess in the 80s, it would be considered a lot.
didnt really know what the film is about beforehand...but had an idea it was about a girl who went crazy. judging from the trailer and the huge amounts of viewer's raving reviews, i thought, this seem like a good movie.
man was i wrong. i was so bored out of my mind by the last hour (3 hours in total) of the film i just went surfing the web and waiting for the film to end.
i dont get all the comments saying how emotional and romantic this film was. i didnt have one inch of emotional attachment to the two love birds, simply because this movie seemed like a chain of scenes where they get drunk, have sex, her throwing things and them saying 'je t'aime' without saying much else.
it just seemed like an utterly unrealistic film.
the following contains spoilers.
i read some comments on imdb saying how this film or betty blue herself is really just a male fantasy. the more i think about the film, the more i see this being true. i didnt think the guy, zorg, really loved betty. he was selfish in a way that he liked her being a little crazy wild horse so much, he didnt really care for her mental health and helped her get treated early on. he kept her being crazy and caged so he and she can go on playing house before she really and truly went mad. and when she did finally get mad to the point of no return, he kills her. easy solution to end a problem at hand. if she were to be alive, he would be reminded of her real illness and not the cute, innocent naive teenage girl he shagged for months before.
and what do we really know of betty blue other than she's hot, young and unstable. her description is filled out by a series of cute little acts and some crazy cute acts too, but i think us, like the protagonist, knows practically nothing about her, especially the series of sudden acts of insanity. which again, makes me doubt the guy really loved her. which in return, makes me feel not romantic towards them at all.
im sure i can think of a bunch of other examples but im tired and dont wanna bother thinking about this film so i will drop it.
i did not drop a single tear by the end, i just wanted to roll my eyes and scream, get the fuck over yourself.
