There was something about the way he looked at him that irritated Kim JaeJoong to no end. It was a simple mistake blown out of proportions; something he could’ve considered if he weren’t so aptly focused on his hatred towards him. The sludge of blood and innards underneath his feet reminded him briefly what truly pissed off his Alpha.

“You’re going to clean this up, Jae.”

Fuck.

The blond sighed but moved not a single muscle as he gazed at the mess he was expected to remove. How was he supposed to know that killing a vampire was messy anyway? When he was a normal human being, perfectly unspoiled by supernatural shenanigans, he assumed that blood suckers simply burn and turn into ash once killed… not a slush of blood and goop. He should be excused at least since it was not only a few weeks when he was turned. But YunHo, being the perfectionist jerk that he was, clearly wasn’t fond of making it easy for him. Nope. Not now, not ever.

Glancing at the domineering figure in front of him, JaeJoong wondered what he did in his past life that placed him in a situation like this. He had such a good life. He was doing so well in cooking school, his parents were the most wonderful couple in the whole word and he had sisters, though quite annoying most of the time, were extremely caring since he was the baby brother after all.

That was until he made that one mistake of walking into the woods by himself and getting bitten by a rogue wolf. A couple of days later after feeling the initial symptoms of turning supernatural, he met Jung YunHo. The guy just appeared in front of his doorstep, looking exceptionally threatening and handsome.

Yep, actually handsome was the first word that came into his mind because Jung YunHo was the type of person you would simply not forget. Did he mention how terribly fit the man was and how his hair was cut into perfection? It was gelled away from his face but when he does feel lazy doing his hair, the luscious dark brown locks fell impeccably around his almond-shaped eyes. Talking about his eyes, JaeJoong could go on and on with a diatribe since they somehow left an impression on him. A flash of those fiery dark-brown eyes could crumble your defences.

YunHo was a towering figure and he was only a few inches shorter than him. Having his hair dyed more than once gave the locks a drier texture compared to YunHo’s crown of glory. Jaejoong’s eyes were huge and almost child-like, his nose looked pretty much normal, but his lips were… let’s say they completed the whole package of his almost feminine appearance and god knows how much he hated it.

The only thing he liked about being turned was the instant boost of power, strength and triceps, biceps, and whatever ceps possible. He remembered staring in front of the mirror one day, just merely observing the sudden appearance of his washboard abs, mourning and admiring at the same time.

Okay, back to the first meeting, apart from looking hot in his leather jacket, YunHo appeared annoyed for some reason he couldn’t fathom back then. “You’re coming with me.” Was all he said and the next thing he knew, he was thrown into a whole new world of heightened senses and prolonged animalistic insanity. He had never hated the full moon as much as he did right now… but it couldn’t be helped.

It was surprising how he accepted all of this so easily. Perhaps the fact that it boosted his self-worth and made him twice attractive had something to do with the acceptance. Although, most of the time, he hated being a werewolf. Today was definitely a strikethrough on his hate list.

“That’s a lot of blood.” JunSu commented unhelpfully somewhere in the room.

“Really, JunSu?” YooChun piped right after. He almost forgot that YunHo brought the other two betas with him during the hunt. The short-haired sup stepped next to him but consciously avoiding the blood on the floor. He just bought a new pair of shoes and vampire blood was definitely a bitch to remove. “I’ll help you-”

“YooChun.” YunHo almost growled at the warning, “As my second in command, I don’t think you should help JaeJoong with his own mess.” There was a mischievous glint in his eyes and his lips were upturned in a sneer.

JaeJoong felt like an intern in an office where everybody gets to boss him around. This was true since he was the youngest in the pack, in terms of turning. If it was a matter of age, then ChangMin definitely got that one, turning eighteen only a few months ago.

YooChun sent him an apologetic smile before he stepped away and left the room together with JunSu. Now he was left alone with the alpha and he couldn’t do anything but to follow his orders.

“Should’ve learned your lesson by now, huh?” YunHo walked around the bloody mess and stood by him, arms crossed. “Never initiate action without my orders again.”

Oh yeah, that’s how everything started. They were hunting for the vampire on a killing spree and JaeJoong happened to have the correct information of his whereabouts. Solving the problem on his own was what angered YunHo. He only sensed him when JaeJoong was on the verge of getting drained dry. Fortunately, they just arrived on time before Jaejoong’s heart’s last attempt of pushing blood to keep him alive. YunHo was so furious; he killed the vampire instantly with a stab of his sharp claws into the un-dead’s chest, crushing its dead heart and creating the unsightly mess on the floor.

“JaeJoong, are you listening to me?”

He looked up and found YunHo staring intently at him. His brows were drawn together in a frown and JaeJoong was quite sure that the older man was highly concerned. Guilt suddenly seeped through him, making him look away and nod silently in agreement.

He felt a warm hand squeeze his shoulder followed by the audible footsteps fading behind him. Although Jung YunHo was a relentless extremist, perfectionist to the core and grouchy to no end, JaeJoong knew he was his alpha, his leader, and the one responsible for his well-being in the pack. He cares.

As much as this was terribly disgusting, JaeJoong sighed in defeat and grabbed the cleaning gloves underneath the kitchen sink.

++

They were merciless when he got home that night and it didn’t help that the entire pack was present to witness his humiliation. Sort of.

“You reek.” ChangMin sniffed him with a look of disgust on his face. “Go take a shower or something.”

JaeJoong told himself that he should get used to the sniffing part. Despite of how horribly degrading and embarrassing to sniff people around, it was a habit they all lived by. “Fine. What’s for dinner?”

The taller man blinked at him as if he asked the most obvious question in the world. “Nothing? You haven’t cooked anything yet.” Right. So one of his apprentice-ly duties was to cook and clean and basically act like a mother hen to everyone. He really wished he could go home one day with a warm food waiting for him instead of having to fix them all a meal. “There’re a lot of pizza fliers in the kitchen, just so you know.”

“Oh I do.” ChangMin answered, grinning, “But I like your cooking more.” That was partly true and a lie. ChangMin also enjoyed torturing him physically and mentally. Being only a year older at being turned, ChangMin suddenly rejoiced at the fact that he was no longer the “maknae” of the pack, much to his consternation.

Rolling his eyes, JaeJoong pushed him lightly on the shoulder as he made his way upstairs. He briefly waved at the couple sitting on the couch. Both Myungsoo and Soojung waved back before slowly melting against each other again. Being mated recently can do that to a werewolf and those two happened to be the most adorable couple he had ever seen. Almost everybody in the pack reeked of something akin to their own musk a little bit of spice he couldn’t put a name on. He couldn’t smell it on JunSu and ChangMin, but YooChun’s scent particularly hits his sensitive nose like a freight train especially when Sooyeon’s around.

“JaeJoong,” a voice called from the second floor and he wasn’t surprised to find YunHo leering at him with his muscular arms crossed. That tank top surely enhanced his guns, making him both hate him and admire him at the same time. Sometimes, he really does hate his indecisiveness.

There was a strange look that crossed YunHo’s perpetually sour face but was quickly wiped away when he spoke again. “I need a moment with you.” That usually meant more scolding and morally degradation. Stepping into the room with faux bravado, JaeJoong mentally winced at the sound of the door closing behind him.

YunHo silently regarded him with an air of arrogance and a hint of sourness judging by the prominent scowl on his face. His arms were crossed, feet apart, back ramrod straight, effectively pulling a Nick Fury on his witty but substantially madcap Tony Stark.

“Is this the part where I explain myself and you rebut every single cell of reason in this body?” he flourished with a wave of his hand down his figure.

“What were you doing in a vamp’s apartment?”

“Investigating.” JaeJoong lifted his eyes and met YunHo’s resilient glare. “I remember a stellar speech about initiative and bravery-”

YunHo interrupted hastily, “On reasonable grounds, Jae. For the life of-why do you have to go chasing vampires on your own or any kind of danger for that matter? We talked about this already!” he sounded totally fed up. A part of JaeJoong wanted to just climb him like a tree and tilt his neck back in submission. The waves of frustration and worry awash him, making him feel guilty twice as much.

Swallowing with slight difficulty, JaeJoong tipped his head low and examined his shoes with interest. He could hear YunHo breathing like a fuming dragon in front of him and he was terrified to look up and see his expression. He hated upsetting his alpha. It was the last thing he wanted and yet for some reason, it deliberately happens as if his supernatural life was meant to be a failure at its best.

“You should commend me for my guts. I just killed a thousand-year-old vampire.”

“Yes, right in the middle of a peace talk between lycan and the dhampir communities.” YunHo gritted out while running a frustrated hand through his as if it pained him to say every word. “You know, you pick the worst times to be an overachiever.” His tone was quiet, but it did nothing to soften his harsh words.

JaeJoong huffed, indignant. “I’m sorry for trying except I really am not?” spreading his arms before him, he continued. “Plus, the dhampir hated that vamp. Weren’t they the ones who wanted to get rid of him?”

“There was a plan.”

“The plan would’ve gotten us all killed. He was so close to attacking us and if I didn’t get a hold of it-”

“You could’ve told me! Or YooChun!”

“I know that! It’s just that-l…” closing his eyes briefly to clear his thoughts, JaeJoong crossed his arms defensively, balking backwards. “They don’t think I’m strong enough to do this on my own.” He began, licking his lips for a moment before lifting his eyes to meet YunHo’s fiery red. “You don’t think I’m strong enough for this pack.”

The taller man shook his head, taking a step forward and quickly shortening the distance between them. “You know that’s not true.” Placing his hands on Jaejoong’s shoulders, YunHo fixed him a look that said so many things and yet none of them were definite enough to figure-out. Was it disappointment? Pity? Anger? Misplaced but completely welcomed feelings of lust? JaeJoong thought he preferred the latter.

Years ago, he would’ve pegged YunHo for someone who enjoyed lots of angry sex. That if he and the alpha were to be together, there would be a lot of battle of wits, explosion of insults and sarcasm that would lead to awesome rounds of hot, angry, unadulterated sex.

It turned out, despite of the hard (no pun intended) surface, frown-y faces and uncontrolled show of brawny strength, YunHo was romantic at heart. The pack is important to him. It’s the only family he had left and JaeJoong… JaeJoong happened to be the most imperative part of it, being his mate and all that jazz.

YunHo wasn’t angry at JaeJoong for running off to his death. He was angry at himself because he couldn’t manage to protect the people he loved.

The young wolf knew about this and yet he allowed his pride to take over and defy his alpha, his mate’s will, seducing a crazed vampire and having the filthy creature almost drink him dry. It was such a stupid move that all JaeJoong could manage was a pathetic sound at the back of his throat before throwing his arms around YunHo in a desperate attempt of clinging to him. The spark of contact between them immediately had his body melting and fitting YunHo’s arms in an instant. On the back of his mind, JaeJoong knew this was one of the perks of making YunHo angry. The make-up cuddles almost topped the make-up sex by one percent.

“You promised me something, didn’t you?” YunHo murmured against his hair and the shell of his ear as he buried his face there to sniff him. JaeJoong felt warm all over.

Pulling back to look at YunHo’s face; JaeJoong cupped his cheek and caressed it softly with pad of his thumb. Losing him would pain YunHo as much it would do to him. Being bonded literally meant life and death. Human marriage had all been but words and irresolute commitments. What he and YunHo had was irrevocable unless one of them dies; there was no getting out of it. YunHo specifically implied this before JaeJoong agreed to it and along with this, JaeJoong promised that he would do his best to make the alpha happy.

Getting bitten by a vampire certainly wasn’t pro-YunHo-happiness campaign. Nope.

“I’m sorry for putting you through that.” JaeJoong worried his lips between his teeth, “… and the numerous occasions that precede tonight’s mishap. I really do love you and making worry is the last thing I wanted. I just want you to trust me on this. I want to protect the pack as much as you do and I can’t do that if you keep on pushing me on the sideline.”

The frown turned to a glaring scowl. “I can protect you and the pack just fine.”

“That’s not-what even-see, you’re not even listening to what I’m trying to say.” Reeling back, JaeJoong tried to explain again with slow placating gestures. “I’m not a damsel in distress. Heechul totally seized the throne on that one. I’m your beta. Your mate. My desire to protect you and the pack is something that is important to me. I may have executed it with less-finesse but… you know me. Old, clumsy JaeJoong with every single Murphy’s Law cliché strapped on his back.” He was relieved to see at least a hint of a smile tugging YunHo’s stern face, even though he desperately tried to hide it by lowering his head.

After a relative silence has passed, YunHo too his hand. “If we didn’t get there in time, you could’ve died.” The red shade eventually morphed back to a softer brown as YunHo raised his eyes to regard him. “I almost lost you.” His eyes settled on the part of Jaejoong’s neck where the punctured marks of fangs used to lay. It was a good thing that it healed or it would’ve made his blood boil just at the sight of it.

“You didn’t. I’m still here.” With a heavy sigh, JaeJoong leaned closer and kissed the stubborn man instead. It started with their mouth simply melding together, pressing softly and retreating until YunHo snapped from his trance and tugged the shorter man closer. The kiss was intense, so intense that it gave both of them a head rush. Every crevice, every taste, every gasp memorized were mapped with their tongues, releasing pent up frustration with the warm fusion of their lips.

Blunt nails raked his ribs, making JaeJoong groan pathetically on the back of his throat whilst wondering when YunHo managed to drag his hand up his shirt.

Once they parted, JaeJoong laughed at the confused look on YunHo’s face as if wondering why they stopped. He was so adorable, the beta thought fondly. “See, a normal couple would’ve tried to finish the argument first before the hot make-out session. Not that I’m complaining.”

Brows still furrowed, YunHo replied with what seemed to be a slight pout on his lips. “I’m sorry I don’t meet your standards of normalcy.” See? Adorable.

“Oh my god, stop before I go down on my knees and worship your dick.”

YunHo’s eyebrows rose gradually up to hairline that it was almost comical. “I’m not adverse to that idea to be quite honest.”

JaeJoong shook his head, lips quirking and eyes alight with brutal honesty. “Same. You know how much I love Yun-junior. I can write sonnets about it. In fact, I have a song right now that I would love for you to hear. It starts with how long-” the expletives of cock-worshipping that slipped Jaejoong’s mouth would put any porn star to shame.

Sometimes, YunHo wondered if he had made the right decision. Ending his mate’s mindless babbling with a kiss effectively reminded him why.

Breaking the kiss for the second time, YunHo was beginning to feel neglected and the way he was pawing at JaeJoong to come back into his arms had the latter giggling. “Later, you big bad wolf.” JaeJoong planted one last kiss on YunHo’s lips as a token of promise. “I need to make dinner for one of your betas. I swear to god, ChangMin has the stomach of a cow.”

YunHo chuckled at that, agreeing. “I’d be surprised if he didn’t hold the world record for pie eating or something.” And with that, he allowed his mate to slip out of his hold, watching him avidly as he exit the room. Knowing that he was watching his every move, JaeJoong made sure to add a bit of sashay to his hips.

“Hey, Jae.” Looking over his shoulder, JaeJoong glanced at YunHo inquiringly. Smirking, YunHo leaned against the sturdy table behind him and said, “I’d let you sing and make sonnets on your knees later if you’re still up for it.”

Spluttering, JaeJoong failed to hide the wildfire of a blush spreading on his cheeks and up to the tip of his ears. He could still hear YunHo’s raucous laughter behind the door as he closed it tightly with shaky hands. For once, he was rendered speechless.
