( Yunho- 26 / Jaejoong- 12 )

Yunho and Jaejoong were playing Janggi, a popular strategic board game similar to chess when the conversation escalated to their music preference. While Yunho preferred the timeless pop music of Michael Jackson, Jaejoong decided that he liked music heavy focus on guitars, bass and drums.

“Why do you like Michael Jackson?”

“Because he shines regardless of time.”

“But isn’t he-” Jaejoong left the sentence hanging, unsure if he should mention the recent lawsuit Yunho’s idol was in at the moment. It was such a delicate topic among the people who worshiped the King of Pop.

Yunho looked at him quietly before shrugging his shoulders, “Yeah, well at least he’s the type of artist who continues to grow as a person and as a singer despite of the rumors floating around.” When the boy didn’t say anything to refute him, Yunho returned the question. “Who’s the singer you admire the most?”

Jaejoong smiled shyly, “I like Kurt Cobain.”

Yunho wrinkled his nose, “His grunge took the fun out of Rock ‘n Roll.”

Brows drawn together, Jaejoong moved one of his horses, aiming to entrap him. “Is that bad?”

Tread carefully, Yunho told himself inwardly as he chose the right words to answer. “Not in my time since rock’s becoming brighter.”

“Brighter?” Jaejoong almost laughingly said, keeping his smile from splitting his face into two.

Ignoring the hint of sarcasm in the other’s voice, Yunho jumped one of his cannon’s forward. “Why do you like him?”

“He’s beautiful.” Jaejoong said. There’s something about the way he said it that made Yunho feel strange and fuming mad. “Did you know that he befriended a homosexual student when he was in high school and suffered from bullying because of it?” his eyes twinkled in mirth, “He’s not gay, but he wished he was so he could piss off homophobes.” Being a boy who only recently discovered he liked boys more than girls, Jaejoong found a whole new respect to the infamous rock star.

Yunho studied the board and it occurred to him that Jaejoong could checkmate him if he took his elephant with his horse. He huffed noncommittally, afraid that he’d blurt out a jealous diatribe. He couldn’t believe he’s jealous of a singer who passed away.

“Who do you like?” Jaejoong asked a moment after. It only dawned on him that his chances of winning this game were higher than expected. Yunho wasn’t kidding when he said he was awful at this game.

You, Yunho thought but he didn’t say. “You mean when I was your age?”

“Yeah.” The young boy was smiling mischievously.

Yunho shook his head. “Nobody. At twelve I had so much stuff to think about.” He said, subtly referring to his constant time travelling at a young age. “But I used to have this huge crush on my neighbor, Sunye.” He remembered her sunny disposition and eye smiles. And of course the hot pants she used to wear every summer.

Jaejoong looked annoyed. “Why did you like her?”

“I don’t know… probably the hormones at that time since she’s the prettiest girl in the vicinity.” He absolutely enjoyed the murderous look on Jaejoong’s face. Oh, if only he knew the truth.

“Are you still friends with her?”

“Nope. She moved to Busan, got married and had kids.” That statement surely killed the root of jealousy and soon, Jaejoong was clapping his hands for winning his game.

“Checkmate!”

“Bravo!” Yunho tipped his head forward, “You are the janggi King.”

“I told you I’m good at this.” Jaejoong declared with so much pride, his cheeks colouring pink from half-embarrassment. “Let’s play again?”

Consulting his non-existent watch, Yunho humored him by saying, “I’ve got some time before I disappear.” They played again for the next fifteen minutes and the progress was quite rapid this time compared to the first game.

“Who do you like now?” Jaejoong queried in the midst of moving one of his soldiers.

“Hm…” Yunho scrutinized the other. Was twelve too young? Sure it was. And a twelve-year-old version of his husband better fantasize about unattainable rock stars than to have to pine over Yunho, the time traveler geezer.”

“Are you married?”

“Yes.” He admitted reluctantly.

“To who?”

“A very beautiful, talented and patient person.”

His face fell. “Oh.” Jaejoong picked up one of his elephants, which he managed to capture two moves ago. “That’s… nice” he seemed kind of put out by this news.

Yunho felt his chest constrict at the look of forlorn on Jaejoong’s youthful face. “What’s wrong?”

Without looking up at him, Jaejoong shrugged his shoulders, “Nothing.” After a couple of moves, he surreptitiously inquired, “Am I married?”

“You know I can’t tell you anything.” He said, meeting his glare.

“I just want to know if I’m going to be alone for the rest of my life.”

“You’re a monk.” The older man teased.

Jaejoong shuddered, “I hope not.” he made a face when his cannon was taken away. “How did you meet your spouse?”

“Top secret information.” Yunho noticed how Jaejoong was beginning to lose all of his soldiers. He then decided to move his Chariot.

“It’s unfair that you know everything about me but you never tell me anything about you and your life.”

Yunho tried to look regretful and patronizing. “True. But I can’t do anything about it and you know that.” For the next few minutes, they concentrated more on the board. Things were looking grim for red.

“Yunho-hyung, are you really a person?”

The older man was clearly taken aback, “What else would I be?”

Biting his lower lip, Jaejoong looked up and met his eyes, telling him sincerely, “A ghost?”

Rolling his eyes, Yunho retaliated, “I’m a real person, Jaejoong-ah.”

“People do not appear and disappear the way you do. You’re like the Cheshire cat.”

“Are you implying that I’m a fictional character?” Yunho spotted the perfect move. Now Jaejoong can take his guard but he will lose his general in the process. He looked aptly at the way Jaejoong stuck out his tongue while deep in thought.

“I wonder if fairy tales are real too.” He suddenly shoots up from his seat and began walking around. His but fell asleep from sitting for nearly an hour and a half and he needed to exercise it a bit.

“Maybe they are but yet to be proven.” Yup, Yunho will definitely win this one judging from the sparse amount of red all over the board.

Jaejoong sat down again and stared at the time traveler in wonder. “You still haven’t proven if you’re real.”

“Neither have you.”

“Do you ever wonder if I’m real?” Jaejoong asked, sounding quite astounded.

Yunho nodded, “Sometimes I wonder if this is all just a dream.” Not only has this made him wonder but the other circumstances of him leaping through time. He chuckled when Jaejoong stretched out his arm and ordered him to pinch him so he would wake-up.

Frowning, the prepubescent boy caressed the reddening spot on his arm. “You pinch like my grandmother and that should definitely wake me up.” Well, there goes his dreaming theory.

“Well, I don’t feel like a ghost or a fictional character.”

The conversation lulled and the two suddenly found themselves concentrating all the more on the minimal pieces on the board. Yunho finally cornered Jaejoong’s general and then he was declared at the winner. He rejoiced a little too much over that since he had been constantly beaten by the future version of his Jaejoong.

He will make sure that his husband would remember this monumental moment once he returned back to his present time.

“Are you married to a time traveler too?” the boy softly asked.

“Oh, no. And thank god for that.”

“Why?”

“It’s dangerous, Jaejoong-ah. Imagine having the whole family time traveling constantly in different years. Not all of them are pleasant, mind you.” Swallowing thickly, Yunho rubbed an imaginary stain on his father-in-law’s shirt. “One time traveler is enough.”

“Ah I bet your spouse worries about you a lot.”

“Yes…” Yunho’s gaze lowered, looking almost regretful. “I wonder what that person is doing right now, in 2012. Maybe still asleep and unaware that I’m gone.”

“Do you love that person?”

“Very much,” Yunho whispered. They lay silently side by side, watching the swaying trees and the bright blue sky. There was a sniffing sound next to him that startled him out of his reverie. Glancing at Jaejoong he was surprised to find him crying silently, the tears streaming downwards his ears. Yunho sat up and leaned over him, “What’s wrong, Jaejoong-ah?” when he just shook his head petulantly, Yunho gathered him into his arms and tried to comfort the distraught boy. “Shh… come on, tell me what’s wrong?”

When he spoke, it came out really soft that Yunho had to ask him to repeat it.

“I was hoping that maybe… you were married to me.”
