verrrrryyyyyy belated RS_Games 2014 recs!

Aug 05, 2016 16:30

Uhhhhh so, I went to post in this year's (2016) RS_Games team group, and found this draft from... lord knows when. Sometime in 2014, given the fics included. So here are some recs, very very late. Also a note to myself to go back and finish reading 2014, not to mention 2015, which I'm not sure I did at all... (I did just start a new teaching job during posting last year, and I probably did not have time to read much at all, let alone the incredible volume that this fest always produces.)

=================

I've been afk for virtually all of RS_Games this year, regrettably, after I finally did manage to get my own piece submitted, so I haven't been able to rec or comment as often or in as much detail as I'd like. But, that said, I'm making a push today because I'm off of school and not yet years behind in my work, and the reveals are on Friday, so.

Title: Mapmaker
Rating: R
Word Count: 8500
Summary: WW2 AU. Remus J Lupin is a geographer working for the RAF, stationed in Cairo, Egypt, under British control. He works in map intelligence, analyzing the precise positions of Nazi troops and airbases, updating geographic data from reconnaissance missions. Cairo teems with squadrons and platoons -- men from all parts of the Empire and beyond. Remus wanders its streets alone, until he meets a pilot by the name of Sirius Black.

I just. Wow. Clearly the author put in a lot of time and effort researching WWII and Cairo and the RAF, and it all paid off brilliantly. The story is not-quite-linnear, which is something I adore, and the attention to language, both in writing style and in capturing the multi-cultural aspect of this setting, is exquisite. As a content note (since for some reson there are no warnings listed in the header), it is rated R but there is hardly a mention of sex. The discussion of the war is not graphic, either, but it is heavy.

Title: Flying By Night
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Word Count: 2000
Summary: Sirius is unable to find the right words to tell Remus how he feels. Instead, he watches his friend, revelling in the peace being with Remus always gives him, from the sun rises until the stars have taken over the sky.

A very sweet character study with attention given to detail in all the right places. And a toothachingly sweet ending :)

Title: fell in love once and almost completely
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Some injury, non-graphic death (not of main characters, occurs pre-story)
Word Count: 4,424
Summary: When Remus is four, his father kills a werewolf in front of him. Eleven years later, he meets an unfamiliar boy with a scarred face and a secret.

A really neat look at werewolf role-reversal, but the characterisations are still top-notch!

Title: And suddenly I’m not so young
Rating: R
Warnings: Nudity and sad things. Implied canon death.
Summary: Just bits and pieces - glimpses from a life.

Beautiful style, beautiful prose, beautiful handling of light and dark in a work of greyscale, and A++ drunk!Sirius who doesn't know what things are called and makes bad puns. Content note, I did not notice any nudity beyond shirtless torsos, though I suppose I could have missed something.

Title: If You Shall Live with Me a Long Time
Rating: Pg-13 or R for language
Warnings: Kursing, Kissing, and Khloé
Word Count: 1,864
Summary: At the Potters, after Sirius ran away.

Remus loves Sirius something fierce, in his own quiet and understated way. And Sirius' POV voice is terrific, as well as all the attention to narrative detail. Great work!

Title: Canis Major, or The Babysitting Story
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Word Count: 3792
Summary: Sirius talks about stars, war, and love, and none of it makes much sense. Good thing his only audience is a baby.

Exactly what it says on the tin. Some real honest Sirius, the kind that shines through when you don't have to worry about the audience understanding you. The light and fluffy tone belies the heavy nature of the piece, but it all really does work together.
