NEW LJ WHAT IS THIS

So I'm basically entirely a tumblr convert anymore, but I hang around LJ for fests and stuff. And I seem to have come back just in time for the next update to the LJ appearance, which is fine.

But the friends feed is suuuuuuper narrow? And there seems to be no way to control this? Am I missing something?
