Recurring theme: "What happens happens." This relates to time travel. Only predestination paradoxes are possible, not grandfather paradoxes. Obviously "the incident" must have happened, regardless of the bomb going off or not; the scientist gets his hand mangled, and 30 years later the plane crashes. This must happen and they cannot stop it, as it sets in motion the entire series, including Jacob getting shanked. Sayid demonstrated this when he shot Ben.
