Title: The Bitch Posse
Author: Martha O'Connor
Summary/Buy me: Here!
Genre: anti-chick lit
Pages: 339
Rating: B+
Notes: It's a happy medium between syrupy sweet Mother Night by Rachel Pollack and the unreal melodrama of She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb. She can certainly keep a reader in suspense and I appreciate the complexity of her characters (as complex as they can be for the genre, anyway). The damned recurring "bloom" of blood/pain/whatever imagery, on the other hand, is so passé as to force a yawn, and the ending seems weak, though I don't think the author could do anything else with it. Overall it's solid writing with no surprises and no nuggets of profundity or wisdom in any of its pages. It's only very slightly amusing and ironic when the writer references conventional chick lit.

I really liked the starkness of the subjects presented and emotional rhythm, but that's probably because I haven't been exposed to this style very much before.

These notes were found on the back cover. I have to wonder if she's all right now.
