Crackpot fanart theories and Wraithfall

Aug 06, 2006 11:50

devildoll kindly scanned Wraithfall, so I downloaded it out of curiosity and uh. SGA tie-in comic, how is it that you trace so obviously and yet Teyla looks like a Korean girl with her hair bleached to a brassy red in that second panel of the first page, and Rodney looks freaky and utterly unlike himself?

I'm beginning to think the "haha look I'm holding a can of spray paint between my toes" airbrushing style is superhero comics' version of the sparkly, flower-petal-infested screentones in shoujo manga. I say this in the most affectionate way possible, naturally.

Icons and manips just CONFOUND me. I mean, it takes a completely different graphic sense and a completely different set of Photoshop skills-- it took me three years to figure out that there was a way for me to cut lineart out and have it on its own transparent layer, I can't even to begin to think about all the cutting and pasting, and layer effects, and, uh, yeah, I don't know, that goes on in any decently complex manip (actually, I start thinking about it and I go, "man, I am so lazy that I would rather just DRAW THAT"). And then I think about how everyone in anime fandom who draws more than Inuyasha stick figures in MSPaint gets a tablet, and I realise that most of the iconmakers and manippers I've come across give no indication that they use anything other than a mouse, and I'm just like HOW DO YOU LIVE. (Heh, newkidfan was the one who made the post I was talking about. And, yeah, JESUS. If you can't call that art, I'm switching majors to computer science and engineering right now.)

Re: the term "fanart", I have a friend in anime fandom who doesn't draw, but does make pretty great icons, and she doesn't think what she does is fanart. And "traditional artists" makes me feel like I should be working with pencils or markers or paint (which I do, but I'm still like "but, but, Photoshop! *points*") because I spent too much time with Deviantart and its funny little Traditional vs. Digital Media system of categorization. Nomenclature is weird, man.

(back to the alien okapi now I SWEAR)

Hee, I'm holding a can of spray paint between my toes! You know, it's so weird, because both indie comics and regular illustrators have been making huge leaps in CG painting so that it's not all airbrushing anymore, and yet comics artists seem to really love the style, I don't know. But, yes, ahhhh, sparkly screentones.

As for the art vs not-art thing, I saw that post on sga_noticeboard and I thought, ouch, wank looming on the horizon. But yeah, manips and icons, I'm like, wait, wait, how did you DO THAT? THIS IS ALL SUCH A MYSTERY TO ME. It does require such different skills, and I have no clue how they get it looking so fantastic.

And I love how newkidfan does those striking juxtapositions. I... I secretly wish she would make a whole graphic novel from original collages, because, like, I think that would probably be such a beautiful book I would cry. And I'd buy it and cry some more and read it on my couch and cry and then I'd put it on my coffee table so my guests could all read it and cry. (This is all in my hypothetical future where I own a home--which may never come to pass.)

And besides, don't collages count as art, even to those old fuddy-duddies? And icons are just bite-sized pieces of goodness. I collect them and hoard them on my computer JUST TO LOOK AT, with secret joy.

P.S. I am so excited about the alien okapi! No pressure, but, SO EXCITED. ♥ (But if you lose steam, don't do what I do, which is to avoid the person who made the request in shame and embarrassment--I like hearing from you!)

I just wanted to jump in and say something that completely doesn't add much to the discussion--but I *hate* that airbrushing style in comics. Oh my god, I hate it. But--thankfully--my sister and I (especially my sister) read a lot of comics and there are plenty with really interesting and beautiful coloring that is. not. airbrush. Like Ben Templesmith!

also, I totally save icons that I never intend to use just to collect the pretty. :D

I am secretly glad to hear everyone hates airbrushing so much, because it's so popular in some lines of comics it MAKES ME CRY.

You know what? I never realised before just HOW PERVASIVE it is. Now I can't stop noticing it. It's like that damn FedEx arrow!
