Shaw Festival 6/2/08: Andrew Gillies Shaw Festival Announces Matching Grant from DeRoy Testamentary Foundation
Media Bulletin #7 Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, June 2, 2008
The Shaw Festival is pleased to announce the DeRoy Testamentary Foundation Shaw Festival Michigan Matching Grant, a generous commitment by the Foundation to match Michigan supporters’ donations to The Shaw’s A Splendid Torch Campaign. The commitment is made for the next three years for up to $50,000 per year.
The DeRoy Grant will be celebrated on June 5 at the Official Residence of The Consul General of Canada Robert Noble, with a reading of Bernard Shaw’s Village Wooing by celebrated Shaw Festival Ensemble Members Catherine McGregor and Andrew Gillies.

The goal of A Splendid Torch, the Shaw Festival’s $20 million campaign for the future, is to grow The Shaw’s endowment and financial resources to a level that will allow the Company to create innovative theatre without compromise, unencumbered by financial constraints. It will allow The Shaw to continue to present the relevant, exceptional theatre for which it has gained a world-class reputation, and will allow prices to remain affordable for everyone who loves theatre, regardless of age and means. A healthy endowment will also reduce the Company’s dependence on ticket sales, which are strongly affected by external economic trends.
The campaign is inspired by the Bernard Shaw quote: “I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no ‘brief candle’ for me. It is a sort of splendid torch, which I have got hold of for the moment; and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.”
The 2008 season is proudly presented by HSBC Bank Canada/HSBC Bank USA, N.A.
