I want to apologise to you all for keeping the fact that I am a mutant from you. For a long time I was angry, for a much longer time I was scared. Those fears seem to have been justified.

They were. Hence why you shouldn't feel like you have to apologize for protecting your own ass and your family by keeping it hidden.
