Matt carefully unscrews the cap of his bottle of syrup, then lets it pour over the stack in a careful attempt to waste as little as possible while covering maximum area.
"Oh please, I know you love the stuff but really?"
"Sure. And I mean, I could say sappy things like love? And sure people keep falling in love. They go back to it every time even though they've been hurt before. But syrup won't hurt you. Just sugar from a tree."
"...Did you just compare syrup to falling in love?"
"...Eat your pancakes. Or I'm telling Arthur you just can't get enough of his scones."
Matt carefully piled his clothes in the suitcase. Another two suitcases were stacked across the room and he heard Al across the hall in the laundry room demanding to know where his blue hoodie was, it couldn't have just disappeared over the summer

He remembers the first time he brought them something. Brownies, then, and watching them with utter delight, watching what was magic to him. Back before he knew them really, back before Fletcher becames his pseudo little brother and Russel left
