So... about an hour or so after I wrote the previous entry, I got an email from a guy responding to my craigslist ad. I wrote back to him and he called me around 5pm. He told me he was rather under the gun to find a place, that he had to move at the weekend. He'd been in the process of deciding between two places he'd seen, neither of which he was totally thrilled with, when he saw my listing and figured he'd make one last inquiry before making a decision.
He arrived at my place that night at 7pm, and we talked and talked and...well, talked, until I practically had to throw him out at 9:30 so that I could finally eat dinner. He called at 11:30 to tell me he'd decided he liked my place best, and that he wanted to be my roommate if I'd have him.
Friday night he came over and we discussed the rental agreement and basic living arrangements and what not, and on Saturday he started moving in. I made a few more concessions than I'd planned on, mainly regarding letting him put his computer setup in the second bedroom, and I'm wondering now if I'll regret that but... well, we'll see. I'm equal parts relieved and nervous about finding a roommate. I think we could be good roomies, but I'm sure we'll have some bugs to shake out first. Like, honestly, I don't know if I'm charging him enough. You should see the desk he put in the second bedroom. It's enormous. The room has practically become his office. Which, on one hand is not big deal since I really wasn't using it, but I will want to use it when guests visit (they'll take my bedroom and I'll crash on the futon), and well, he's now taking up just as much space and me and he's not paying half of my monthly outlay. So... there will probably be some renegotiation there. We wrote in a 30 grace period into the agreement.
Regarding the computer setup, yes, he's an IT guy. He does mostly consulting and some contract work, and he works from home about as much as he works on site. On the plus side, he's going to wire up my home with CAT5 so that we don't have to depend on my wireless setup for always-on connectivity and so that I can keep my computer in my room. Maybe I'll have him run speaker cable while he's at it. He seems very willing to help me fix my computer, which would be great. Ultimately, I want a laptop, but until I can afford one it would be nice to have a computer at home that doesn't hang all the time. He has a laser jet and a scanner and various other goodies that he'll let me have access to. He also does voice-over-IP, which I can use to call my sister if I want. Very cool.
The main thing that freaks me out a little is how quickly he's moving to try and make this "our home" instead of him just being a lodger in a bedroom. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just... well, it's my home. And he has to work on my time table.
And damn did this all happen fast. I think my head is spinning a little.
But on the finance side... yay! He's paying his move in costs to me today, deposit, December pro rate and January. In cash.
AND! When I came into work today, there was a card slipped under my keyboard from my boss. With a check in it for $200. She and the president dug into their own pockets to give both Z and I such checks. How incredibly nice is that?
