Are We Still Talking about This?

Not too long ago, the book form equivalent of Us Magazine For Politics came out.  It’s red, it’s shiny and it’s full of gossipy “he-said-she-said” goods that just drive Americans crazy.  Crazy with interest, that is.  It’s called Game Change by journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann.  The book covers the 2008 Election, because, I guess, we didn’t get enough coverage while it was happening.

Like any good piece of gossip, every page is chalk full of controversy.  I even hear there’s cocaine in there.

But that’s not the heart of the issue here.

No-out of all the scandals that the book allegedly has (I can’t be arsed to read it.  I’ve got better things to do than read political drivel like this) the one that has piqued America’s (at least the Republicans’) interest is Harry Reid calling then Senator Obama favorable because he’s light skinned and didn’t speak in a Negro dialect unless he wanted to.

No seriously, this has been plastered on Fox and CNN for the past week.

Now, I’m no fan of Harry Reid, and those who have read my few political bits will know this, but the amount of “uproar” from the Republican side is about as real as Styrofoam and irritating as hell.  But then again, the Republican Party has swiftly falling more to the left and I have refused to align myself with them for the past five years, so I don’t know.  Maybe this uproar is real.

Anyway, this story doesn’t so much upset me as it annoys me.  Harry Reid should have as much a chance to speak his mind as the next American.  Are there double standards?  Of course there are.  Trent Lott is asked to step down for saying pretty much the same thing, and Reid gets a pardon.  But at the same time, a comedian, say-Chris Rock-could probably say the exact same thing (in fact, I believe he has) and it’s completely all right.  What’s the conclusion we come to then?  That politicians aren’t allowed to speak their mind?  Everything is shrowded in doublespeak and entendre and big, fancy lawyer-speak.  Hmm…maybe we need to work on that.  Maybe we can get something done for once if we just spoke what was on our mind-like getting Nancy Pelosi out of her position.  Honestly, if the President and Vice President were to suddenly die, she’d be in charge.  And if that happens, guys, I’m moving to Canada.

So, politicians aren’t allowed to speak their minds.  The saddest part about this whole spectacle is that it’s bloody true.  There is a Negro Dialect (please wiki “Ebonics”).  Now, the thing about Obama being lighter skinned making him more appealing might be true.  I don’t know; I can’t speak for America because I don’t particularly like the guy.  And he has big Will Smith ears.  Maybe that’s it.  America thought they were voting for Will Smith.  Ha, who knows.

But, what I can say is true is this.  If Obama were to pop on stage all ghetto-d out, talking like 50 Cent, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t get elected.  And I’m pretty sure a lot of people would run him back to Nigeria if he did that too-I’m just saying.  If Obama wants to “speak Black” with other Black folk, I don’t care.  My dad does the exact same thing.

So, in conclusion coz I’ve got to run to class-

Harry Reid shouldn’t be vilified for not only speaking his mind, but speaking the truth.

And Republicans-stop acting like you actually care about political correctness.
