So, I've now played through the new Smash Bros. game, and since I've got no other forum to rant about video games, I'll use this one.
Now, I realize that most of these are probably not in for rights issues, but it would still be nice to be able to fight with them:
- Simon Belmont. Of all the characters missing from the game, this is the one I wanted the most. If nothing else, no other character has a whip, and there's a whole assortment of additional items and songs that could have been included in the game as well.
- Takooni mario. I envisioned this as a mix between Mario and Kirby. Most importantly, he would look almost as cute as a red panda.
- Tecmo Bo Jackson. I have no idea how this would work, but can you imagine a smash attack of Christian Okoye and the Giants defense running across the screen and throwing everybody to the ground as Bo zigzags back and forth across the screen? Hmmm, maybe it should be an assist trophy.
- Toe Jam and Earl. Since they spent most of their game avoiding other characters, maybe they wouldn't be best for a fighting game. However, the music still would have been great.
- Megaman. Maybe too similar to Samus to be included, but too much a mainstay of the NES to not be.
- Some character from a FF game: Cloud (FF7), Zidane (FF9), Fighter (FF1). I just think it would have been a fun inclusion, and there'd be an excuse to include a chocobo.
- Mii. This is the most egregious absence of all, as Nintendo certainly has the rights to this, and could easily have made their moves a near-exact clone of another character (maybe the choice of the Hyrule characters), with taunts right from how they react in Wii Sports and Wii Play.
Even with those missing characters, I'll still pretty content with the game. It plays just like the previous version, but looks and sounds nicer (choosing/finding songs throughout the game is a nice feature). Unfortunately, they have very little implementation of the motion sensitivity of the Wiimote, which is disappointing. I'm still holding out for the ability to download characters a little down the line, but I doubt that they implemented this feature. Overall, I'll give the game a 9.5. It gets a 9 just for being SSB, but only 5/10 for what it could have been.
