THE SCREW YOU, CANON! MERLIN ART/FICATHON. __________________________________
She turns their hands over as if looking for something... and finally after some minutes he can't take it anymore.
"What are you looking for? If you tell me, maybe I can help."
Her eyes flutter as she looks up, long dark lashes touching down on freckled cheeks. "Checking for strings."
She's got that glint in her eye that means she's baiting him, and who is he to disappoint her?
"Strings?"
"I had quite decided that you're embarrassed to be seen with me, and yet here you are holding my hand - in public."
He almost lets go of her hands in shock. "What?"
She just gives a little shrug and does let go as a group of maids walk by, heading up the stairs into the castle.
"It's okay."
He steps into her, sliding his hands to sit either side of her waist, "It's not okay, Gwen."
She flushes, her nose crinkling slightly, "I was...I was kidding, Merlin. It was just-"
"No you weren't," he interrupts, then reminds her, "I know you too well. But apparently that's not mutual - how can you believe that?"
Gwen's mouth opens to say something, and then she seems to think better of it. "It's nothing- oh we were having such a lovely day."
"You know, I still have that flower you gave me; I pressed it into a book," Merlin confesses only to have Gwen look confused. "It gave me hay-fever but I didn't want to lose it-"
"What does-"
"And that hat you made me for Winter Solstice is the single ugliest thing I have ever seen-"
Gwen's eyes flash. "Merlin."
"But I love it," Merlin continues briskly. "Coz it's warm (which is nice) but mostly because you thought of me and made it," he flashes a smile. "I like that you think of me when I'm not around and sometimes I think about you thinking about me."
Gwen smiles slowly, starting to catch on, "You're trying to prove a point."
"Always, Gwen, always." After a quick glance around, he presses a kiss to her temple. "But mostly to you...for someone who can scrounge up some faith in Arthur Pendragon you have a shocking sense of self-worth."
She seems to relax a little, her hands coming up to fiddle with his jacket, "So you're not..."
"Of you?" Merlin asks, his tone droll. "Please. If anyone should be embarrassed it should be you because of me."
"But I like you," Gwen says softly and Merlin grins. "...I don't care what people say."
Merlin's smile falls, "Why, what do they say?" Gwen ducks her head and Merlin sighs, "You're winding me up."
She looks up with a smile. "You make it so easy."
She's kinda perfect, he thinks to himself; she doesn't even have the courage to be intimidating.
He leans his forehead against hers, "It seems I have a problem, Guinevere, but I'm hoping you can help me with it..."
Gwen smiles wider. "Anything, you know that."
He gives a weary sigh, "Well, I really want to kiss you, right now, but I don't want to ruin your reputation or anythin-"
She tugs him down, and he goes willingly. Her mouth is soft on his, and he sighs, pulling her closer, wanting her closer.
Her hand ghosts along his cheek, tickling, as she pulls back, "Solved?" she asks, brightly, her own cheeks glowing.
"I don't know," Merlin cocks an eyebrow. "I think we should work on it. Possibly for many hours in all sorts of places-"
Gwen laughs, "Merlin!"
He waves a hand at her. "I'm not saying my room, or anything - though lets not be hasty and say never-" he cut himself as she starts walking away, towards the steps. "Hey!"
"I have to go to work!"
She's more than halfway up the steps when he finally knows how he wants to reply to that. "What a terrible thing to say!"
A bunch of heads turn in their direction, as her laughter rings out before she disappears out of sight.
"Girls," Merlin mutters to a passing guard, he includes a little hand wave to express how ridiculous they are.
The guard frowns.
After a moment of surprise, Merlin frowns back.
