------------------------------------------

He turns the pages of the leather journal, concentrated on the equations and diagrams he wrote through the last decade --- they mean nothing to him, because every constant, every variable, every footnote or speculation are now lost in time (his time). His brain aches when he tries to put the pieces together, feels the high amount of radiation though it’s not there anymore.

From the window he sees the Moon, glowing in the top of a not-so dark sky (midnight, perhaps); the only sounds he can perceive are his own breath and the ocean (always moving). There’s a knock at the door of his cabin, so he opens it slowly, not being sure of the motivations of his sudden companionship.

“Are you busy?” - it was the red-haired woman of his team, the one he barely recalls. “The name is Charlotte”

“Uh... no...” - he stutters as his cheeks get a little rosy. “Sorry about your name, I just...”

“You already told me that. Back in Fiji, remember?”

He looks at the floor, truly ashamed (no, I don’t remember, I can’t remember). She takes him outside, a whiskey bottle and a pack of cards in one of her hands.

“I used to watch the stars at the beach when I was little” - she points out at the firmament.

“Why are you telling me this?” - the headache seems to lower every time she speaks, her voice acting like a painkiller (it almost feels like constancy).

“Because you’re the kindest person on this bloody freighter” - she confesses, offering to the physicist the first sip of liquor. “We had one of the most interesting conversations I’ve ever been part of. That was like four days ago”

He hears the voices in his head: she was carefully paying attention to his twisted explanation about time-traveling consciousness and electromagnetism (the reason why he was mentally ill). Cheap whiskey burns his throat, but in her presence every hurt is neutralized.

“I really want to help you, Daniel”

“You are already doing it” - he passes a hand through her red locks (the first time he does it), closes his eyes in delight and doesn’t notice the wide smile on her face.
