In honor of his birthday, and being inspired by others, I'm doing something I never do...I'm sharing something I wrote. For Don's birthday...(I would have posted to the
eppes_challenge but I don't think I have time to get it in before midnight given I have to be approved for the community and all that - ok, maybe not. Added and posted as well.)

Summary: An unexpected surprise...
Disclaimer: I don't own Numb3rs. If I did, believe me, Colby wouldn't be in the situation he's in...
Don didn’t usually mind when his phone rang. He didn’t mind when he was called away from whatever game he was watching. He didn’t mind leaving the comforts of his brother’s house or, on those rare occasions, his apartment to go and face the dangers of the job he loved. But today…today - he minded.
Instead of sitting alone at Charlie’s, his feet up on the ottoman with a cold beer in one hand and the remote in the other, he was on his way back to the FBI office. He wanted to be selfish. He wanted to say that today was his birthday, and even though he didn’t want a big deal made out of it, he at least wanted the miscreants of the world to behave just this one day so he wouldn’t have to do his job.
“No such luck,” he thought to himself as he shut off the engine to the Suburban. He leaned back in the seat, running his hand over his hair and breathing deeply - needing just a moment before he had to focus his mind on someone else’s needs.
With a sigh, he reached for the handle and stepped out of the vehicle to make his way into the office that might as well have been his home. David had not been very specific about the details of the case they were about to take on so Don wasn’t exactly sure what he was about to face. Whatever it was, he’d just have to take it one step at a time and remember that today might have been someone else’s birthday…someone else who needed his help more than he needed his time to relax.
He was adjusting his badge on his belt when the elevator doors opened onto the floor of the FBI office. He looked up just one second before nearly every one he knew and loved shouted “SURPRISE!”
It took him a few moments to switch gears. He’d not been called in for a case at all. He’d been called in…for…for a birthday party. His face changed from his typical focused scowl to a wide grin as he searched the crowd for the most likely suspect responsible for this. As soon as he saw his brother, immediately he had him in a head lock. “You son of a…”
“Hey…hey…watch the hair,” Charlie chuckled holding his brother about the waist. “I didn’t think we could get you to come out unless you thought you could pummel someone.”
“I may yet,” Don quipped, letting go of his brother to point two fingers to his eyes and then at Charlie letting him know he was watching him.
“Donnie, don’t be an ass. Leave your brother alone and say thank you,” came the jovial voice of his father as he stepped forward to let his presence be known.
Don turned an appreciative grin to his dad as he went to stand beside Alan, clasping a hand to his shoulder before he scanned the crowd in front of him. His teammates, his friends, his family…they were all there and they were smiling with him. His smile softened as it occurred to him that this was what really made life worth living. Moments like these were why he worked so hard at his job. He worked to make the world safer so every one could have a chance at this…at friendship, at love.
“Thank you…all of you,” he finally sighed, his appreciation evident in his softened voice. A moment later, he was grinning once more as he looked around. “Now, where’s the beer?”
