character name: Mami Tomoe
Fandom: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Timeline: After the fight with Charlotte in episode 3
character's age: 15 or 16, she's a third year in junior high
powers, skills, pets and equipment:
Mami made a contract to become a Puella Magi (magical girl). Because of this, she carries what is called a Soul Gem which she uses to transform. Outside of battle, her Soul Gem takes the form of a ring on her hand and the finger it's on has a flower shaped marking on the fingernail. However, Mami is unaware of the gem's true purpose: housing her soul while her body is an empty shell. If taken 100 meters away from her body, she will collapse and die. This separation of soul and body allows Puella Magi to suffer less pain than usual. They can even shut it out entirely, though that affects their reaction time.
When in her Puella Magi form, Mami wears a Western inspired outfit, complete with knee high boots, a buckled corset and feathered hat (under which she keeps her teacup). Her Soul Gem transforms into a flower shaped hair clip. Her primary weapons are the numerous flintlock muskets she can summon and uses them for both long ranged and melee attacks. She can also create and manipulate ribbons in various ways, such as for a safety net or to restrain someone. In addition to this, she has Tiro Finale, a "final" attack where she summons an extrememly large flintlock musket to decimate her enemies. In episode two, she's shown to have a bit of a healing ability, as she is the one to heal Kyubey's injuries.
Back in Mami's world, the more magic a Puella Magi uses, the more corrupted her Soul Gem becomes. If it becomes too corrputed, it is believed that she dies. To prevent this, they use Grief Seeds that are dropped by the witches they kill to "clean" their Soul Gems. Hwever, the interference has cause Mami's Soul Gem to remain frozen in it's curent state, allowing her to use magic without fear of corrpution. In addition, any girl chosen by Kyubey to become a Puella Magi gains the ability to communicate with him and each other telepathically.
Apart from her Soul Gem, Mami will have the Grief Seed she won from Gertrud. It has just one use left.
canon history:
Madoka Magica is very secretive when it comes to the character's pasts.
All we know regarding Mami's past is that some time before the canon events, Mami and her family were in a car accident, leaving her parents dead and herself seriously injured. That was when Kyubey appeared and offered to form a contract with her. It was either become a Puella Magi or die right there, so she accepted his offer and made her wish.
Now, on to the canon.
Mami rescues two girls from a witch's familiars, transforming into her Puella Magi form. The girls turn out to be Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki, two second year students at Mami's school. She heals a creature named Kyubey, whom Madoka and Sayaka had rescued from another Puella Magi, Homura Akemi. Kyubey announces his intention to form a contract with the girls, and Mami invites them over to her apartment. There, she explains that Kyubey can grant wishes, but those who make wishes must in turn become Puella Magi and fight witches, who are born from curses. It could be any wish they wanted, but Mami advises that it should be something they'd risk their lives for. In exchange for the wishes, they would be given Soul Gems that would house their magic powers and allow them to transform. The girls aren't sure about the idea, so Mami offers for them to accompany her on a witch hunt, which they agree to.
The next day, the three set out to find a witch. Mami uses her Soul Gem to follow the aura of the witch from yesterday and ends up tracking it to an abandoned building. She leads them through the witch's barrier and protects them from the familiars until they reach Gertrud herself. Mami attacks in a very focused and precise manner, never letting Gertrud get the best of her. She swiftly ends the battle with Tiro Finale, greatly impressing the girls, especially Madoka. After the battle, she explains that the more magic she uses, the more corrupted her Soul Gem becomes. To "clean" it, she uses the Grief Seed dropped by the witch. She then reveals that Homura has been watching from the shadows and attempts to be friendly to her. Her efforts are brushed off, cementing their rivalry.
After another hunt where Mami kills a familiar, she tells the girls about the accident. She explains that she didn't have time to consider her wish, which she regrets because she didn't wish for Kyubey to save her parents. She also advises Sayaka not to wish for other people's sakes, as that comes with certain precedents. Later that night, Mami and Homura have another confrontation, and Homura tries to warn her away from convincing Madoka to become a Puella Magi. Mami believes that she's jealous of Madoka's potential and dismisses her warning as an attempt to scare her away.
The following day, Madoka finds Mami and says that there's a Grief seed near the hospital where Sayaka's friend is. It was close to activating, so Sayaka and Kyubey stayed behind to guard it. They hurry back to the spot, but by the time the reach it the barrier has been activated. They enter the barrier and are once again confronted by Homura, who tries to say that this witch is different from the others. Mami, fed up with her at this point, uses her magic to create ribbons and bind her so she can't follow them.
As they make their way through the maze-like barrier, Madoka tells Mami that her wish is simply to become a Puella Magi and help people. Mami reflects on how lonely her life as a Puella Magi is, even though she doesn't regret her choice. She says that she's been afraid many times before, and that she cries when she's alone, so she really isn't a good role model for anyone. But, with Madoka promising to fight by her side, Mami feels immense relief. It's then that Kyubey contacts them through their telepathic link and says the Grief Seed is transforming. Infused with a new desire to fight and the belief that she'll never be afraid again, Mami makes short work of the familiars and quickly reaches Charlotte. She takes a few shots and finishes off with Tiro Finale. The battle is over even faster than the last one.
Or so she thinks.
In the blink of an eye, the witch transforms into a giant caterpillar and bites off Mami's head, killing her instantly.
Which is why she's a little confused when she wakes up in an unknown room in Anatole.
personality:
On the outside, Mami is everything a Puella Magi should be. She's fearless and caring, killing witches to save people and only using grief seeds out of necessity. The girls look up to Mami as a big sister figure, Madoka especially. She comes off as a very calm and mature person.
Underneath the surface, however, Mami is a very lonely girl. She's been working as a puella magi all by herself for a long time. While this has given her plenty of experience, it also has alienated her from normal girls her age. She confesses to Madoka that despite her cheery disposition, she often feels alone and scared and isn't fit to be anyone's role model. When Madoka offers to become her parter, it is the happiest she's ever been and she even tells herself she's not afraid anymore before the battle with Charlotte.
She has a somewhat idealistic view of the world, trusting Kyubey completely and believing what she's doing can save the world. This world view was shattered in one of the previous timelines when she learned the awful truth about the Soul Gems and Puella Magi. She loses her mind and attempts to "save" the other girls by killing them, revealing how emotionally fragile she truly is.
