Josh Ritter - The Animal Years
Key Tracks - Girl in The War, Thin Blue Flame, Good Man
It's just so Pretty. There is this looming thanks to the powers that be for telling me to buy this album. Several times i had picked it up and said, “i'll wait.” my only wish is that i should have bought it sooner. Thin Blue Flame is my anthem. It's hauntingly heavy piano gets into your soul and is only replaced by the words in Girl in the War. It is an album to be in awe of.
Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
Key Tracks (As if you don't already know) Go Go Gadget Gospel, Gone Daddy Gone, Transformer, Just A Thought
Danger Mouse is the shit. Nothing more can be said. I have heard this album described as “The album Marvin Gaye would have made if he were alive today.” and i would have to agree.
KT Tunstall - Eye to the Telescope
Key Tracks: Other Side Of The World, Another Place To Fall, Heal Over
I hate counting this CD as of 2006 cos it's 2years old. But we as Americans suck cos any good music from other countries takes forever to get to us if as labels feud over demographics and markets and yada yada yada. Point is you own , so you don need to hear about it cos you know it rocks already. :)
Dixie Chicks - Taking The Long Way
Key Tracks: Easy Silence, Voice Inside My Head, Everybody Knows, Not Ready To Make Nice
This album cements a huge comeback year for the Dixie Chicks, and serves as insight into the turmoil between albums (a companion documentary titled “Shut Up And Sing” after the lyrics in Not Ready to Make Nice, also exists). Lyrically solid and musically satisfying easily throw it in the top ten.
Cold War Kids - Robbers and Cowards
Key Tracks: We Used to Vacation, Hospital Beds, Hang Me Up To Dry
A late comer, we're talking weeks ago i picked this one up and it's a treasure, it's jumped into the top 10 on my lastFM account faster than any previous album and it's the missing link between punk rock and bands like The Fray. We Used To Vacation tells the story of an a broken family from the point of view of the alcoholic father stating “I promised to my wife in children/ I'd Never touch another drink as long as i live/ but even then it sounds so soothing/ to mix a gin/ this will all blow over... this will all blow over in time.” My favourite song on the record Hospital Bedswith the lyrics “I've got one friend/ Laying Across From Me/ I Did not choose him / he did not choose me/ we've got no chance for recovery/ joy and hospital / joy and misery.”
Train - For Me It's You
Key Tracks: All I Ever Wanted, All I Hear, If I Can't Change Your Mind
Okay So it's a pretty poppy choice for me, but it's great. At the start of 2006 this was on constant rotation in the Ipod and is still pretty much skip-resistant almost one whole year later.
Mat Kearney - Nothing Left To Lose
Key Tracks: In The Middle, Won't Back Down, Wait, Bullet, Where Do We Go From Here
“No Parachute, there's no safety net here/ wanna float on the water to face these fears/ coming on strong like it can't be wrong/ i say 'I don't wanna fall In the Middle.'” A Rap/pop/Coldplay label-debut from Mr. Kearney makes me think he's in a genre all his own.
Lily Allen - Alright, Still
Key Tracks:Everything's Just Wonderful, LDN, Littlest Things
This will be a US debut in 007 but as far as my year is concerned Lily peaked in 06 for me and i'd hate to have to face another KT Tunstall moment in which i hate myself for not have listened to it sooner. Lily is the girl who you'll see next year holding Lady Sovereign's head away far enough so she's just out of distance of the punches she'll be throwing. This white-brit-rapper is the real deal and far more tolerable.
Charlotte Martin - Stromata
Key Tracks:Stromata, Drip , Four Walls, Redeemed
This is the Indie cd of the year in my opinion. It took me a second listen to really love this record and every time i see her live i love her more. The dark sister of Tori Amos in my opinion is frustrated in deeply tormented by being dropped by the big label, bad relationships and inner everything.
Ben Harper - Both Sides Of The Gun
Key Tracks: Please Don't Talk About Murder While I'm Eating, Morning Yearning, Cryin' Won't Help You Now, Reason To Mourn
A folky disc and a pop/rock disc from Ben Harper and despite mixed reviews, it's really the album that launched me into Ben Harper. I'm sure it's not the best CD I've heard this year but it has helped shape 2006.
