Lavender’s Turn
“Feel better,” Ron said as he leaned down, squeezed her hand, and gave her a chaste peck on the cheek. He took Hermione’s hand and turned to leave.
“Wait!” Lavender called as they headed out of the infirmary, “Hermione, can I talk to you for a moment? Alone?”
“Uh … um … Okay,” Hermione reluctantly agreed. Turning to Ron she said, “You go on, I’ll meet you in the Common Room.”
“You sure? I can wait.” Ron was obviously reluctant to leave the two girls alone.
“No really, your mum’s waiting there for you,” Hermione insisted.
“Don’t be too long.” He leaned to her and whispered, “I love you” placing a tender kiss close to her ear, which sent shivers down her spine.
“Cheers Lav,” he said with a wave good-bye to his ex-girlfriend.
“Cheers” she said, sighing as she watched him leave. Once he was gone she turned her attention to Hermione. “So, it’s been a rough year.”
“Yes, it has.” Hermione replied quietly, obviously not in the mood for small talk, having noted Lavender’s look of longing as she watched Ron’s retreating figure.
“I hear you’re the one who blasted Greyback off me.”
“Well … yes, it was nothing.”
“Thanks.”
“No problem.” Hermione wasn’t comfortable talking with Lavender and she really wanted to get back to Ron. “Look I had better go. So, if there’s nothing else …” Hermione made to leave.
“There is something.” Lavender gathered her Gryffindor courage, “Hermione I am so sorry.” Her voice started to crack.
“Lavender, really you don’t have to …”
“No, I do! I knew you cared for Ron but I went after him anyway.” Lavender let out a small sob as she finally confessed to Hermione.
“Oh.” Hermione sat heavily in the chair by the bed with a thunk. Hermione felt betrayed by her roommate. She thought she had kept her feelings for Ron safely hidden; to find out Lavender knew how she felt and pursued Ron anyway was like a kick in the stomach.
“I’m the one that kissed him first. I could tell you two had some sort of disagreement so I made my move. I knew you fancied him some, but I didn’t realize it was mutual. I certainly didn’t know how deep your feelings were for each other until much later.”
“Was the empty classroom your idea too?”
“Yes. I’m so sorry.” Lavender rushed to get it all out before Hermione could get up and leave. “I hate myself for what I did to you. I knew you cared for him but went after him anyway. I knew he cared for you but I wouldn’t let him go. I thought I could convince him to care for me. I thought I could make him look at me the way he looked at you. I thought if I slept with him he’d love me.” Lavender was sobbing by the time she reached the end of her rant.
“Excuse me?” Hermione’s eyes grew wide with Lavender’s mention of sleeping with Ron.
“But he wouldn’t, he couldn’t,” Lavender tried to explain through her tears.
“Wouldn’t, couldn’t what? What do you mean?” Hermione demanded.
“He wouldn’t sleep with me; he couldn’t love me. He loved you. I know that now.”
“I know it too, he’s told me.”
Lavender plead with Hermione as she wiped her tears from her face, “We never had sex Hermione. You have to believe me!”
“I do, Lavender, I do.” Hermione tried to placate the distraught girl. “Ron’s not the type to have sex without being in love.”
“See, you always knew him better,” Lavender admitted with a small smile. Feeling in a confessional mood, she said with a laugh, “Not that I didn’t try. I offered him sex, knob jobs, anything to make him stay mine. He refused all offers.” Lavender shook her head and laughed at the memories of her attempts to seduce Ron Weasley.
“Look, I really don’t need the details.” Hermione was definitely not comfortable with this topic of conversation.
“I just don’t want you to be worried about how far we went.” Lavender explained apologetically. “We snogged - a lot - but his hands always stayed above the waist and over my clothes.”
“What about your hands?” Hermione couldn’t believe she just asked that.
Lavender had the decency to look uncomfortable, “Well, yeah … I did stray below … a bit. I rubbed him through his trousers a couple times. And we … uh … rubbed against each other some … you know, when we were ,uh … but he never …‘finished’.”
“Okay. I get it, no more. Please.” Hermione interrupted, looking embarrassedly at the floor. She really didn’t need to be tortured by the mental images Lavender was creating.
“After Christmas break he never initiated anything, he wouldn’t even go off in private with me anymore. Looking back I realize his most passionate kisses came when you were present. I suppose I should thank Merlin he never called out your name.”
Hermione recalled Ron moaning her name in this very infirmary while he was still with Lavender, his subconscious reaching out to her. It was the beginning of their healing.
After an awkward silence, Lavender continued, “I’m also sorry for the things I said in the Common Room the night I broke up with him. I was so angry when I thought I lost him to you.” Lavender’s eyes grew sad as she remembered the pain and anger she felt that night. “After a while I came to realize he was never mine to lose. He was yours, always yours.” Hermione nodded enthusiastically at this observation. “He really is quite a catch Hermione. Don’t let him forget it.”
“I won’t,” Hermione assured her. “You don’t have to tell me how special Ron is, Lavender. I’ve known how brilliant Ron is for years. I’ve loved him for years.”
Hermione stood to leave. “I really had better get going, Ron’s waiting.”
“Are we okay?” Lavender asked, mimicking Ron’s earlier question.
“Yeah we’re okay.” Hermione finally managed a genuine smile for Lavender. “I hope you feel better soon,” she said as she turned to leave.
“Oh Hermione!” Lavender stopped her before she could escape.
Hermione turned to her, “Yes?”
“Make sure you invite me to the wedding!”
Hermione couldn’t help but laugh, “Will do! Take care.” Lavender gave her a smile and a wave as Hermione hurried off to meet Ron, needing to reassure herself that they were truly together.
