Character: Sohma Kyo
Series: Fruits Basket
Version: End of Vol. 3, before Akito's appearance at the school opening ceremony
Age: 16
Gender: Male

Appearance: Kyo doesn't look like your typical Japanese schoolboy. He stands a little taller than most at 5'6", but what grabs your attention first is his distinctive coloring. Orange hair and red eyes certainly make him pop. As for clothing, Kyo doesn't go for fancy: black v-neck tee, grey cargo pants, brown belt, and plain white tennis shoes and socks. Closest he comes to accessories is the Juzu bead bracelet on his left wrist. Although it kind of clashes (white and red beads and orange hair? yeah, no), he never takes it off.
In his cat form, Kyo is a very normal looking if very orange cat. In his true form, he looks more like... Well. An emaciated, ungainly, brown lizard-goblin thing with rabbit ears and purple, slitted eyes. Suffice it to say, it's not a pretty thing to see, or smell for that matter. Apparently this form just reeks of every bad smell you can imagine mixed together and shoved in a garbage can for a week. In August. Not fun at all.

Personality: At first glance, Kyo seems like an arrogant, blustering idiot who's much too headstrong for his own good. And, well. It's kind of true. Kyo has built up this image of himself up in response to his treatment at the hands of the rest of his family. Everyone, from his mother to the head of the family, treats him as the Cat, first and foremost. So he's been pitied at best, despised at worst, from everyone around him for as long as he could remember. Kyo finally snapped after his mother's death, after everyone blamed him for what had happened. He started getting angry, and it's around this point that he begins blaming Yuki (the Rat) for all his problems. Kazuma tried to be a calming influence, but the schoolyard teasings Kyo received just made him worse and more violent.
But beneath all of this, Kyo really and truly believes that he is a monster, just as he's been told all along. He blames himself for most of the misfortunes that have happened in his life: his mother's death, Honda Kyoko's death, the shame he believes to have brought on Kazuma with his actions, everything. It's because of this, he doesn't think he deserves anything, let alone friendship or love. Thus, Kyo pushes everyone away, yelling and threatening to keep people away before they have a chance to hurt him and prove everyone right.
He sees his only salvation from a life of isolation destined for the Cat (in order to make all the other members of the Zodiac feel better about their own lots in life) lying in defeating Yuki. This bet with Akito has just further focused Kyo's surety that Yuki is the root of all his problems. He feels he can't do anything, deserve anything, until Yuki is beaten.
Upon meeting Tohru though, Kyo starts feeling... Something else. He's inexorably drawn to her friendly, generous personality and he doesn't really understand why. It's conflicting him because he feels guilt over being there when her mother died and doing nothing, and of course his deep-seated belief that he doesn't deserve to be liked by anyone.

Fears: Oh, there's. Quite a number of things that could go here. First and foremost is probably the head of the family, Sohma Akito. He (because to the extent of Kyo's knowledge, Akito is a male) is the God of the Zodiac, and thus his word is law to the other members of the Zodiac, literally. He is vengeful, cruel, sadistic, and no one can predict what he'll want next. Kyo knows that Akito will be the one to put him in the Cat's Room, and that is another thing that frightens him. To be fair, knowing that one is going to be locked away for the rest of one's life with no human contact would freak anyone out. And this fact has been hanging over Kyo's head from the time he was old enough to understand it.
Another fear is that everyone has been right about him, that he truly is a monster that no one will ever love or want. And again, this fear has been somewhat justified what with his mother's death, his father's leaving, and oh, just what he's heard every day of his life. He's deathly afraid of this being proven right, which thusly means that he's afraid of being seen in the Cat's true form. Hence he always makes sure his bracelet is on - he checks it when he first wakes up, and before he falls sleeps at night. This fear is also the reason he acts the way he acts around people in general, as explained in the previous section.

Weaknesses: As Kyo is pretty much your stereotypical angry/angsty human teenager, he has all the regular human frailties. He also has an unbelievably short temper, and it doesn't take much for him to lose his cool. When he gets angry, he doesn't think, so he acts rashly and is liable to hurt himself or others. Then of course, there's the whole turning into a cat/demon-thing.

Strengths/Abilities: Kyo has been trained in martial arts from around the time he was six years old. Thus, he has extensive knowledge of traditional hand to hand combat as well as enhanced strength and endurance due to excessive physical training.
Another "ability" are Kyo's transformations. Any time he is hugged (here defined as full torso-to-torso contact) by a female, or any time he feels extreme physical or mental stress, he turns into a cat. And if his bracelet is taken off, Kyo changes into his true form. During either of these changes, he usually loses at least half of his clothes. The cat, because he becomes too small for pants and shirt; the true form, because he becomes too large and his clothes get ripped. So be prepared for some naked Kyo if he gets hugged.
Oh, and one more thing. Kyo has the ability to telepathically direct and communicate with regular cats, due to being the current incarnation of the Cat. However, he doesn't really use this talent often. Cats are still attracted to him and tend to swarm wherever he goes, though.

History: Long ago, the Jade Emperor held a banquet to decide which animals would be selected for the Zodiac. The Cat was invited but the Rat deceived him, telling the Cat the banquet was the next day. Thus, the Cat slept through the banquet, believing it to be tomorrow, and was left out of the Zodiac. After learning of the Rat's deceit, the Cat declared itself the Rat's eternal enemy. Much more recently, but still (presumably) several generations ago, the Sohma family was cursed, and twelve Sohmas at a time were possessed by the spirits of the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac... And one Sohma by the spirit of the Cat.
The Cat's current incarnation was immediately recognized due to Kyo's emerging in its true form. His mother tried to love him despite his curse, even as the rest of the family shunned and despised him. He was confined to the main Sohma compound, away from the world, but he didn't mind as he had his mother and her "love". However, even she couldn't keep up this façade forever: consumed with despair over birthing a monster, she committed suicide when Kyo was only six years old. His father, always distant, totally abandoned him at this point and blamed him for his mother's death. Kyo probably would have spent the rest of his life in some corner of the estate, but another member of the family, Sohma Kazuma, stepped forward to become his guardian. He took Kyo away from the main house to live at his dojo and began to introduce him to the world at large. Kyo was finally enrolled in school, but as children can be cruel things, he was immediately singled out for his unnatural hair (orange due to the influence of his possessing spirit). Kyo didn't react too well - he would chase after other children, threaten them with death, and (of course) get into fights. Even at home among the other Sohmas who were well aware of the curse, he was reviled and ostracized with only a few rare exceptions.
Kazuma began training Kyo almost as soon as he brought him into his home, hoping it would help calm him and teach him to control his temper. While this has yet to happen, Kyo really took to martial arts, enjoying it. He eventually even takes time off of school to go train in the mountains (where no bear-fighting occurred at any time). Part of the reason why he likes it so much is because it's something Kazuma taught him, and Kyo sees it as a way to be close to him, to show his appreciation for all he's done for him. But the other part of it is the bet he made with the head of the Sohma family, Akito. If Kyo can defeat the current Rat, Yuki, before graduating high school, he'll be fully accepted into the family and the Zodiac. If he cannot, Kyo will be locked into the Cat's Room (a specially isolated room designated for the current Cat) for the rest of his life.
It was during the aftermath of one of his attempted beatdowns of his least favorite rat bastard (through the course of which both Shigure's roof and a girl named Honda Tohru got beat up), that Kyo was informed that Shigure had in fact made a deal to have the Cat move into his house and go to school with Yuki and Tohru. Kyo was of course rather upset at someone making decisions for him, but when the alternative was to go back to the vengeful and frightening head Sohma he grumblingly agreed to the arrangement. So for the next few weeks, the Cat grew to know the girl now living with the three Sohmas and cleaning up after them, Tohru. It's around this point that he'll be brought to the House.

Kyo was pissed. Not that that was anything unusual; not that it wasn't obvious enough from the trail of broken furniture and walls he left behind him. But it definitely deserved mentioning. Especially since the path of destruction he was leveling from the second to first story of Shigure's house was the third one that week. The author cringed downstairs as the cacophony of splintering wood, ripping fabric, and outrageous epithets reached his ears. He tucked the pen he'd been trying to balance on his nose into a pocket and waited for his younger cousin to appear.

And of course, the cat did not disappoint. It was barely a minute after the pen pocketing that he slammed open the screen separating Shigure's "office" - because really, it isn't an office without some actual work being done in it. His face redder than a tomato, he stood in the doorway working his jaw, but nothing came out... At first.

"WHAT THE FREAKING HELL, SHIGURE?!!?!"

"Now, Kyon-kyon, remember. Inside voices."

"SCREW YOUR GODDAMN INSIDE VOICE I'LL YELL AS LOUD AS I FREAKING WANT TO!!!!!!" He punctuated his bellowing with a punch going straight through the wall. "AND DON'T FREAKING CALL ME THAT YOU RETARD!!!!"

Shigure sighed morosely. His poor house. "Fine. What did you want to discuss... Kyon-kyon?"

"WHAT DO YOU THINK I WANT TO TALK ABOUT?!!?!!?" Kyo threw something at the older man, which after some further inspection, was a rather beautiful ruffled gown. "WHY THE HELL WAS MY CLOSET FILLED WITH CRAP LIKE THIS!?!?"

Shigure smiled benignly, fingering the gown and imagining it on adorable little Tohru-chan..... Oh. Kyo was still here. Well, there was always later. "I was going to tell you, Aya stopped by. He was convinced that your wardrobe was in dire need of refurbishing. You should send him a thank you note, he did it out of his own pocket." He conveniently left out how it was his own suggestion for the action in the first place.

The resultant screech could probably be heard throughout the prefecture.
