Title: Hiding in Plain Sight
Author: Becca/Paul
Pairings: Jack/Nathan, Jared/?
Categories: First Time, Angst/Drama, AU
Summary: Jack has a secret, and a problem when a new scientist comes to Eureka.
Warnings: None...yet, this'll get updated as I write.
Author's Notes: So, definitely not going to look at the plot bunny section of Marshal Science again...the bunnies there are very aggressive. I want to thank River for being a lovely, kind, patient, slightly demanding beta. And I should probably thank minalynn53 for spawning the bunny, but that would be admitting I like the bunny.

"Dr. Stark is at the door." Jack sighed, and stared at the ceiling.

"I suppose asking you to use the death ray on him is out of the question?" Jack muttered.

"Indeed. That would only cause damage to the structure of the bunker." Sarah replied.

"That was a rhetorical question Sarah." Jared chuckled from where he stood in the entrance way.

"You try living in an house run by an AI programmed by a guy with an IQ lower than yours and still having to call him at every turn to keep a "low" profile. And being unable to program some of the more... annoying idiosyncrasies out of the thing so that it doesn't tip the guy off." Jack said. "It's like living in my own personal hell."

"There are worse places to live Jack, as you well know." Jared said, expression turned serious.

"At least the Center didn't talk back." Jack snarked. He sighed. "You're right, and I am grateful you got me out of there. Now, back to the original question."

"Can you use the death ray on Dr. Stark?" Jared replied. "I thought we figured that out. It would damage the structural integrity of the bunker." Jared put on his best innocent look, which truth be told was almost as innocent as they came.

"No, the one about why you're here in Eureka." Jack sat on his couch and turned to stare at Jared.

"Oh. That one. Do I have to answer that?" Jared shifted his eyes from one side of the room to the other, unconsciously taking in all the items that Jack had put around the room, making the stark bunker a home.

"Yes, because this may just be another step on your trip to self discovery, but it's my LIFE. I live and work in this town! You can't just stop here and rip my life to shreds with two words, and then just move on!!" Jack was shouting by the time he finished, eyes blazing. He took a deep breath before continuing. "I have a child, I have a job, and I have a life I love. I need to know if I'm going to have to uproot it all because of you. I think I deserve an explanation at the least." Jared flinched at the words.

"I think my mother worked here. I needed to gain access to the personnel files at Global Dynamics. Look for someone who looks like her. Maybe she met my father here, maybe this is where they got married. Maybe Eureka is the answer to all my questions. If I had known you worked here Jack, I would have tried to be more discreet." Jared looked apologetic, knowing his words wouldn't get him a nod of approval from the other man, but needing to try.

"Sheriff Carter, should I ask Dr. Stark to leave?" Sarah broke in, her voice grating on Jack's nerves again. He glared at the ceiling.

"Yes." He said, voice tight. "And please escort Dr. Soleri to the door as well."

"Of course Sheriff." Sarah activated her latest technology to push Jared toward the door, swinging it open and shoving him out. Nathan stared at the shorter man in shock. The door swung shut before Stark could take advantage of the opening. "Thank you for the upgrade Sheriff." Sarah commented. "Dinner will be ready in twenty minutes, should I call Zoe and ask that she return?"

"Sure Sarah, and Sarah, revert to original voice." Jack sighed, going upstairs to grab his uniform before the AI could add it to the laundry.
