September is the worst time of year to be sick. Half of her colleagues are just coming back from their summer breaks, along with all the judges, jurors, and what seems like half the criminals in LA. There are six case files deposited on Robin's desk when she gets back from a weekend in Sonoma with Don, and she reads through one before sickness strikes.
It comes out of nowhere. One night she's fine, and the next morning she's feverish and sweaty, doubled over the toilet containing the remnants of her breakfast. Don is sympathetic, holding back her hair and promising to pick up some of Alan's chicken soup on his way home, but it does little to make her feel better. He's not the one who's going to spend the day at home in misery.
By suppertime, she feels much better. She and Don walk through the neighbourhood hand in hand, and it's easy to forget about this morning. Until the next morning, when it starts all over again.
After four days of the same cycle, Robin begins to get suspicious. A trip to the drugstore and the longest five minutes of her life confirm what she sort of knew.
"You look better," Don says when he comes home.
Robin grins, flashing the pregnancy test. "Turns out I didn't have the flu after all."
