He arrives before everyone else. Years of experience working in situations like this have taught him that he won’t have a moment to himself once the team gets here. He needs a few minutes of peace, a few minutes to gather his thoughts before it's too late to go back.
From his spot perched on the edge of the altar, Don has an unobstructed view of the synagogue. It’s breathtaking. The rows of pews, their wood worn with age, the elaborately painted ceiling, the stained glass windows, it all gives him a sense of peace, There is no doubt in his mind that this was the right place.
He doesn’t expect to die. David won’t let anything happen to him, and Don trusts his own instincts when it comes to Buck Winters. But if something were to go wrong, he wouldn’t mind dying in this place.
The sound of doors slamming outside breaks the silence. David and the others have arrived. It takes them a few minutes to get themselves into position, but no one says anything to him. They know what they’re doing, and so does he. Once they’re finished, he can barely even tell they’re there.
Don sighs, leaning back against his arms. The stage is set. All he can do now is wait.
