Jeff's Music Corner

...okay, let's see what I got coming up:
-two more Jazz rehearsals before the big performance
-wind symphony auditions on Thursday
-a whole bunch of fantasy football stuff (Josh, yer goin down)
-and of course the Detroit Jazz Festival, where Diane Schuur, accompanied by Wayne State University Jazz Lab 1, will be the main headliner, performing at night on Monday. Come down and watch; it's gonna kick ass.

I'm getting a little too excited. There's gonna be a boat load of good music coming out on September 12, including BNL's newest album, Barenaked Ladies Are Me. Plus, The Tragically Hip are coming out with a new album in October.

So, with that in mind, let's get to the review:

SONGS:
....hang on a minute, I'm listening to a BNL demo of Running Out Of Ink....
....
....okay
"Pretty Little Thing" by Fink: Interesting sound. Fink is listed as folk but sounds a little bit like R&B, at least on this song. Nothing flashy, but it's a good, quality song.
Rating: Good

"We Share Our Mother's Health" by The Knife: Hey Josh, what was that one game we used to play with the little spaceships that would move from planet to planet and when met by an enemy ship would be forced to fight (You used to beat the crap out of me in that game)? The beginning of this song sounds kinda like the sound effects from that game. As you all know, I'm not one to really like "electronic" music but this song is okay.
Rating: Pretty Good

"Listen Up!" by The Gossip: The singer sounds like Kathleen Edwards (folk singer, look her up, she's good) and the drums at the beginning remind of that one song at the beginning of Wedding Singer (You spin me right round, baby, right round...). And cowbell lovers rejoice for there's plenty of cowbell in this song.
Rating: Pretty Great

"Tangled" by Jackie Allen: Pretty good jazz singer. Interesting choice on how to use the guitar on this song; kind of sounds Rock-ish. Definitely a good buy.
Rating: Great

"Sewn" by The Feeling: Good song but I could do without the nanana's. Other than that, I can't find any other fault in this song.
Rating: Good

"Mi Tumbao" by Tres Coronas: Oh great, latin rap. I do like the trombone playing in the background.
Rating: Eh

"Dipama" by Richard Bona: A nice little jazz piece. I can't wait to hear more of this guy.
Rating: Awesome

"In Deux Time" by Deux Process: Okay, this rap is pretty good. Nothing to over the top, refering to swearing.
Rating: Pretty Good

"Are You With Me?" by Vaux: One of those songs where it sounds nice then turns to semi-hard rock for the refrain. Definitely future 89x stuff (if it isn't already on there).
Rating: Good

"James River Blues" by Old Crow Medicine Show: If you're not a fan of old-school folk, you're not gonna like this. If you don't mind it, you'll like it.
Rating: Pretty Great

"Baptized in Dirty Water" by Chris Thomas King: Yeah, now that's some good blues. Fans of the blues will like this.
Rating: Awesome

"Change" by Joy Denalane featuring Lupe Fiasco: What kind of surname is Fiasco? Anyways, the background make the song sound older than it is (it gives off a little bit of a Motown vibe)....hang on....she's german?....okay, that makes sense....Okay, the backgrounds sound like something similar to some modern German rap/R&B stuff.
Rating: Pretty Great

ALBUMS: It's getting late so I'll get them tomorrow.
