Here's my view on that whole thing, if you want to know lol.
I'm an Atheist too. I'm not a big fan of organized religion. However, I would never slam someone for their religious beliefs, especially if they were my friend. I think bashing religion is just as bad as having religion forced down your throat. It's all about respecting each other... I know none of my religious friends would harass me to come to church, or read the bible, and I would never sit there and try to tell them that their religion is wrong.
If people are personally fulfilled by going to church, or participating in Lent, who am I, or anyone else for that matter, to bring them down about it? The only time I would get defensive is if someone said something like, "Oh, you don't believe in God? Well you're going to hell," but I know none of my friends would say that to me so I wouldn't bash them for believing..
That's just my view on the whole thing.... sorry for the novel. I don't think anyone wanted this to cause a huge rift in our friendships, religion is just one of those issues that people tend to be really passionate about.
I have no problem with lent or catholocism in ANY WAY. my whole argument was that you shouldn't NEED lent to better yourself. I don't care how you better yourself, as long as you do it you know? I totally respect people for their beliefs, I'm sure it didn't sound that way commenting after what jake said. I could have worded it more respectfully, but just because I'm not religious specifically doesn't mean I can't have an opinion, and if I do I'm an asshole. I'm not going out of my way to utterly slam anybody's beliefs, I shouldn't have said anything and ignored his post. I don't think lent is a crock in any way like his post implies, I just think you should want to better yourself regardless of lent, but if that's what some people need then fine.
And I've been feeling left out anyways lately, so the rift just felt more solidified to me.
Hey, just to clarify.... Lent isn't just a way to "make yourself a better person." I know that I don't need Lent for that. Lent is supposed to be a time where we, as Catholics, sacrifice something for 40 days just as we believe Jesus did. It's a time for us to go without and understand what it means to make those sacrifices.
I tend not to post anything on Jake's wall because I think he's an arrogant ass that thinks he knows what Catholicism teaches. I have been to church my entire life, been to Catholic school, been to catechism, gone to youth conferences, etc. And on top of that, my mom was a director of religious education for a Catholic church for the better part of 20 years.
So, I don't really think he has the right to comment on Catholicism unless he has the knowledge to back it up. And he continually misquotes my religion based upon things he finds online and other out of context things. Just because you know a couple of Catholics or you read the Bible doesn't mean you know what my religion is all about. That's all I'm sayin.
And, I know I already said this but I'm sorry you felt left out. It wasn't the intention at all. <3
I agree, luckily lauren and I already straightened everything out. Jake loves to say those kinds of things to set people off in the worst way, so lesson learned there to not buy into it.
