I thought I'd recommend a couple of my favorite EPs. EP technically mean "extended play" and usually has up to 36 minutes. It's longer than a single, but shorter than a full length LP. I like EPs because they are short and to the point and tend to have good songs (and not a lot of filler).
Dashboard Confessional - So Impossible This is one of my favorite releases by Dashboard Confessional and got me really in to them. All the songs are acoustic and guitarist Dan Hoerner of Sunny Day Real Estate play on it. It tells a story about falling in love. All 4 songs were later performed on MTV Unplugged (released as an album) and an electronic version of “Hands Down” is on their next album, A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar. My favorite songs are probably “So Impossible” and “Remember to Breathe”.
The Format - Snails EP I just uploaded this EP for someone and forgot how good it was. “Snails” is a great song by The Format, but I also love “Janet” and the 3 acoustic versions of their songs. Great for fans of The Format or people who want to get to know their music.
Mute Math - Reset This was Mute Math's first release. The song "Reset" is completely instrumental, but it's one of my favorite instrumental songs. I also love the inspiring lyrics of "OK".
Straylight Run - About Time Straylight Run is releasing a bunch of EPs instead of a full length album right now. "About Time: is the last EP they released. I love how the title is “About Time” and that the songs are about time, whether it's about change over time, such as in “I'm Through with the Past”, or just a play on words such as in “Don't Count Me Out”.
Deas Vail - White Lights I've been getting in to this band lately. I haven't listened to their full length album as much, but I love this EP. It has a lot of really pretty songs that make me feel good. I always go back to "Balance" and "White Lights".
Punchline - Rewind I wasn't originally going to put this on my list, but I just listened to this EP the other night and remembered how good it is. Punchline recorded this CD before they signed with Fueled by Ramen in 2003. The tracklisting is creative - the songs are “Play”, “Rewind”, “Stop” and “Power Off” so they all kind of connect with each other. I love when albums and Eps have themes like that.
What are your favorite EPs?
