Live Albums

I love listening to live albums, especially for my favorite bands. I have a ton of rarities and shows recorded from people in the audience. I like hearing officially released live albums too though and how they can really capture the energy of the performance. I think these albums are good if you're fans of the band or if you're just being introduced to them.

Dashboard Confessional - MTV Unplugged - I love the MTV Unplugged sets. I used to listen to this album when I was really in to Dashboard. The only turn off is the crowd singing along if you're not used to it (I read somewhere that the crowd in this particular set was pretty much picked out by MTV which I've heard MTV does that a lot at award shows and stuff, but it's still good). I love hearing Dashboard Confessional live and I hope to see them live one day.

Ben Folds Live - This might be my favorite album by Ben Folds. Some of these songs I prefer live than on the album such as “Not the Same” (with the crowd singing) and “The Last Polka”. It has a good selection of Ben Folds' music and the cover of Elton John's “Tiny Dancer” is one of my favorite covers ever.

The Format - And Now I Hope That You're Alright - This EP by The Format has 3 songs off Dog Problems, one cover and two unreleased songs performed live. I couldn't pick a favorite because they all sound great, but I love "Janet" and "Inches and Falling".

Taking Back Sunday - Live at Bamboozle '09 - I have a bunch of recorded shows of Taking Back Sunday on my computer, but it was nice to get an official release of them live, especially with their new lineup (the guitarist changed). They play a good mixture of old and new stuff and I think the album captures the energy they have live.

The Starting Line - Somebody's Gonna Miss Us - This is another newly released album. It's actually a DVD, but I only have audio (I think there's a lot of behind the scenes stuff and a documentary about how the band filmed in the DVD). The Starting Line are currently taking a break and this is their final show at Bamboozle 2008. The title, which is also the name of one of their songs, fits perfectly. The played a good set of songs (even though they didn't play 2 of my favorite songs by them) and it's bittersweet because it was their last show.

Post your favorite live albums or songs performed live.
